Taking Refuge
December 21, 2013
Read: Proverbs 18:1-10
In the medieval world, farmers would care for their crops until an enemy appeared on the horizon. Then they would flee with their families to their fortified city for protection from the marauders.
The city of Carcassonne has been a refuge for generations. Built in the 5th century bc, this stone fortress has provided protection for Romans, Gauls, Visigoths, Franks, and French. Its sprawling size and majestic watchtowers and battlements gave confidence to those hiding inside its protective walls.
As believers, we can take refuge in the presence of the living God. The book of Proverbs tells us: The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe (Prov. 18:10). The name of the Lord refers to Gods characterabounding with faithfulness, power, and mercy. The term safe means set on high out of danger.
We all face threats at times that make us want to run for cover. Some seek security in material wealth or relationships. But the Christ-follower has a more secure refuge. Because of who God is and what He can do for us, our best protection ultimately rests in Him. If you are facing a threat today, go to the Lord, who is a strong tower. You will find refuge in His care.
In the times of greatest struggle,
When the angry billows roll,
I can always find my Savior,
Christ, the Refuge of my soul. Woodruff
In good times and bad, God is our safe resting place.

Bob Rivers - Chipmunks Roasting On An Open Fire
Chipmunks roasting on an open fire,
Hot sauce dripping from their toes,
Yuletide squirrels fresh fileted by the choir,
They poked hot skewers up their nose. Everybody knows some pepper and a garlic clove
Help to make them seasoned right.
Tiny rats with a crisp golden coat
Will really hit the spot tonight.
And now when Santa sees his tray,
There'll be some home-made chipmunk jerky for his sleigh.
And every hungry child is gonna' spy
To see if chipmunks really sing when they fry.
And so I'm brushing on some honey glaze
To keep them crisp and juicy too.
Let's hope they get served many times, many ways...
Tasty chipmunks..... good food.
And so I'm offering some recipes
From chipmunk pie to chipmunk stew.
I'm not really sad that it ended this way
Furry chipmunks..... screw you.

Kicking off this weeks' continuation of Canteen oddities is Paul McCartney's demo of the song "Come and Get It" which he wrote for the 1969 Ringo film, The Magic Christian, to be recorded by the newly signed Apple label-mates Badfinger.
McCartney recorded the solo demo of the song on 24 July 1969, when he arrived early for an Abbey Road session with the Beatles. He sang the double-tracked lead vocal and played all the instruments: singing and playing piano on the first take, singing again and playing maracas on the first overdub, drums came third and then bass guitar was added last. It took less than an hour to finish.
McCartney presented his demo to Badfinger (then called The Iveys). He offered produce this song and two other Iveys originals for the movie starring Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. The Badfinger single was released on Apple Records in sarly December 1969 in the UK, but not until mid-January 1970 in the U.S. where it became a hit for the band, peaking at number 7 in the United States, and number 4 in the United Kingdom. It was the opening theme for the film and was repeated during the movie's closing credits.

Robbie Robertson wrote "Up On Cripple Creek" released as a single in November 1969, reaching #25 on the Billboard Hot 100, The Band's biggest hit record. Drummer Levon Helm sings lead on this rousing country-classic slice of Americana (despite the fact that the members of The Band hail from Canada). They got their start as Bob Dylan's back-up band after he shocked the Folk Music establishment at 1967's Newport Folk Festival when he showed up with an electric guitar and The Band. A few weeks ago, Dylan's Stratocaster from Newport sold at auction for over $1,000,000, the highest price ever paid for a single guitar.
"Cripple Creek" was a staple of Band concerts throughout the group's career. The first live version is from their "Before The Flood" tour when they reunited with Dylan in 1974. The final selection is from The Band's "farewell" concert, The Last Waltz which took place at Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976 and was filmed for a 1978 motion picture. The event included an actual Thanksgiving dinner for the 5000 invited attendees, with ballroom dancing and guests artists ranging from fellow Canadians Neil Young, Ronnie Hawkins and Joni Mitchell to Van Morrison, New Orlean's Bobby Charles & Dr. John, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, Neil Diamond and an extended set with Bob Dylan.

This week there was a thread on FR about a new release of Beatle Demos, Out-takes and alternate versions. I didn't participate in that thread because the majority of posters seem to think that alternative Beatle stuff must be crap. I must now say that at the age of nine I saw them debut on The Ed Sullivan Show and Beatlemania crept into my childhood and robbed me of it. From that Sunday night in February 1964 forward, I gave up my ambition to be an astronaut or a cowboy when I grew up. I wanted to be a Beatle! So, I know I've got a soft-spot for the greatest R'N'R band ever, but that's my lot in life and my collection of rarities leans heavily upon the fab four. Even their crap is better than most band's heavy lifting imho. Here's one of the most beautiful ballads ever composed:
