Top Cop Shows Off Chicago's "Gun Vault"

Each week, Chicago police Supt. Garry McCarthy shows off to the media all of the guns officers have collected off the streets in recent days.

Those guns are held indefinitely inside an expansive warehouse in a location undisclosed to the public. From the floor almost to the ceiling, row after row, shelf after shelf and bin after bin, are guns.

"We've recovered more than 6,500 guns so far in 2013, and every year for I don't know how long the Chicago Police Department has recovered more guns than any police department in the country," McCarthy said as he provided NBC Chicago a recent, exclusive peek inside the facility.

" I'll bet there are some sweet pieces in that warehouse."

I doubt it. I served as an evidence custodian at one time. The Chicago PD setup is an ideal scenario for evidence to go "missing." I'd wager most the "good stuff" long ago sprouted legs and walked out the door, as happened at the Washington, D.C. police evidence locker some years ago. I doubt they have ever conducted a quarterly "eyes on" evidence inventory of all their holdings. If anything, they probably confirm the evidence tags are in place, but nobody has ever opened the bags and boxes to confirm the guns are physically present.

In the report, McCarthy thinks the answer is getting all guns registered, and all sales registered. Otherwise, "nobody" knows where they are and they end up "on the street". I guess it has never occurred to hom to get all the gang-bangers and drug cartel enforcers "off the street".

I'll bet thousands of the "destroyed" guns have over the years ended up in hundreds or thousands of $h!tcago police officer personal stashes. It would be a bet I would surely win.

They should auction them off to Texas before they cut them up and pay some bills. Our Sheriff depts have auctions every year to raise money for equipment. I’m sure we would buy them for bulk prices to auction them off. I barely missed a Desert Eagle .44 mag for $600 year before last. I’m still sick. The only thing worse would be to know some asshat put it in a crusher.

Can’t wait to get my Illinois concealed carry in 4 months.

Fantastic!

I’ll be walking down Michigan avenue with two 1911’s, smiling from ear to ear.

You're not going to want to hear this, but don't carry anything you don't want ending up in Chicago's "Gun Vault" or evidence room. You'll go broke and die of old age fighting to get it back. Carry something else, something you can afford to loose.

F.U.C.P.D.!

One of the exmaples, a 1972 purchase by an old lady, who died in 2006, this nitwit goes, "We have no record of what happened. Was this lady a straw purchaser?"

Yes. He actually said that.

The implication is that those 6,500 guns were confiscated from people who committed a crime or are prohibited from possessing firearms. These crimes supposedly carry hefty, mandatory sentences. How many of the people they caught with these guns are now behind bars doing serious? My guess is less than 10%.

IIRC in Chicago less than %10 of homicides result in a arrest, conviction, and prison sentence. I think it may have even been less that %5.

If they did prosecute every crook who deserved it to the full extent of the law our prisons would be bursting at the seams with Sons of Obama and the Sons of Mexico. It would be RACIST! It would cost too much. Plus, having street thugs roaming about helps keep the middle-class in line.

how could this possibly be?? Guns are illegal and therefore not available in Chicago. Do they need to pass more laws restricting gun acquisition. They should stop this foolish gun conficastion and rely on new legislation to fix the problem.

That’s right up there with an on camera statement made by NOLA Chief at a murder scene. Several bodies under tarps. Bullet holes in everything on the street. The Chief is standing ankle-deep in spent brass. The reporter asks, “What happened here, Chief?” Super-sleuth responds, “Sumpin’ baaad happened here. Sumbody’ wanted dees boys deaaaad!”

“You’ve recovered more guns than any other police agency.”

Let us not fall for the Orwellian newspeak. Virtually none of those guns were “recovered”. They could only be “recovered” if they were stolen, in which case they should have been returned to the rightful owners, and not be in the warehouse.

Those guns were “confiscated”, “impounded”, or perhaps merely, “seized”.

They were not “recovered”.

Was there any breakdown as to TYPE of weapon?

The "gun vault, " or the Evidence and Recovered Property Warehouse, as it's formally known by the department, is currently holding approximately 80,000 guns. There about 56,000 handguns, nearly 2,000 assault weapons and 21 machine guns.

So in other words, no. Just "handgun," whatever the heck an "assault weapon" is, and whatever the heck a "machine gun" is. I highly doubt they actually managed to confiscate 21 NFA registered full-auto rifles... And what's with the numbers? They say 80m,000, but only categorize about 58,000 of them. Are the rest cap guns, BB guns, pencils, and Pop Tarts?

"Each week, Chicago police Supt. Garry McCarthy shows off to the media all of the guns officers have collected off the streets in recent days."

They should instead show mugshots of all the criminals that the guns were confiscated from and any/all victims of violent crime associated with that criminal.

In fact, the Chicago PD should publish a giant coffee table book each year containing mugshots of all the violent criminals who use illegal firearms, their rap sheet, and if possible photos of their victims and the circumstances of the crime. I've suggested for years that gun control advocates publish such a book and let America see the faces of criminals and the poor unfortunate victims of their crime. Maybe they can even expand to stabbings.

Gosh, why don't they do that?

Oh, I know why: Doesn't fit their agenda. The average American would spend one minute flipping through that book and think either "OOh, I think I'm seeing a trend here..." or "Yep. Just as I suspected." and just possibly resolve right then and there to acquire their very own first gun.

Right, better just allow the press to photograph scary guns and put the blame on those. Good work Chicago PD, you louses.

So they didn’t know where one gun was since the 1970’s. So?

Here’s the rest of the story Chicago police Supt. Garry McCarthy didn’t tell the NBC reporter. The CPD has this huge stash of seized guns. Every Friday and Saturday night they sell off part of their stash back to the thugs and gang bangers to make some loot for themselves. Cycle: confiscate illegal gun, put into CPD “gun vault” until the heat is over, then sell gun back to bad guys. This is the essence of “good business” in Chicago.

"Guns from World War II will kill you today the same as back then."

I have to keep my WWII guns in a separate safe. They keep trying to talk the young guns into going on a killing spree.
