WASHINGTON Hank Ronan knew he would get the job. He had sailed through three rounds of interviews and hit it off with the doctors at the diagnostic center in Annandale, Va., where he had applied to be a driver for $11 an hour.
Shuttling patients to appointments was a world away from his 20 years as a software engineer, but it was the best that Ronan could find after being laid off in 2011. He was eager to get back to work and granted the doctors office permission to run a credit check. Ronan never heard back, he said Tuesday in an interview.

Hardly, Some people just draw the line at a different place than you do. I am sure there are things you would object to an employer having access to as part of the hiring process.
Again, it’s my personal information. Should they have access to medical record too?

That should be left up to the company to decide.
Medical information and credit scores are not the same thing at all.
You go to buy a car or house and tell them that your credit score is private like your medical records, and try not to get laughed out the bank before not getting the loan.

It really frustrates me when I see a comment like yours on Free Republic. It means that even on a website dedicated to limited government, property rights and individual liberty, there are still too many so called conservatives who maintain a knee jerk reaction to sob stories by uttering the liberal battle cry "There ought to be a law!!!"
There are millions of laws and regulations now that strangle any potential employer to hire the people they believe are the best and to run their businesses the way they deem appropriate. Millions. And you want to add another law to strangle this employer's liberty?

We have a tough enough row to hoe to put an end to liberty robbing legislation. We don't need so called conservatives fighting for the enemy.

Sure, and if the employer thinks an interview with the candidate’s ex wife will give them an accurate picture let them at it.
There ought to be as law against people wanting the federal government to make laws controlling the way we conduct our everyday lives. Oops, there is. It’s called the Constitution of the United States.
Democrats don’t want criminal checks either - all these ‘character’ checks work against Democrats... and yeah, every now and then one of us. But for dems - it’s a way of life. (In case someone thinks this is a dog whistle - yes, in fact I am talking primarily about inner city blacks)

Did I say that? I only challenged your assertion about the correlation between character and credit rating.
I don’t like businesses using credit reports for jobs unrelated to finance or security, but I haven’t suggested a big government solution. That’s a different debate.

Regarding right of a potential employer to access a person’s credit score. A credit score is absolutely a matter of privacy unless the potential job duties involve financial responsibility or the handling of sensitive information. There is no reason for an employer to have access to my credit score in other circumstances. I thought rights of an individual to be secure in their own personal information was more important to Conservatives than the rights of employers to access such information.
Not to mention the amount of errors a credit score often contains and the difficulty in correcting those errors.
The sad thing is that sad stories can cause even the most staunch constitutionalist to have a liberal knee jerk reaction and call for a new law to address some perceived unfairness.
Here we have some guy who didn’t qualify for the job because the employer didn’t like his credit history and we have dozens of Freepers reacting by calling for new legislation.

Credit checks for employment are just another problem for identity theft victims. Credit reporting agencies aren’t too quick at fixing these things.
Employment is a mutually agreed upon contract devoid of force.
If the employer and employee cannot come to a common agreement on the methodology of qualifying the employee for employment, they shake hands and part ways.
This in no way violates your financial privacy.

Credit is about trusting someone’s word to do what they said they would do.
Bad credit means they can’t be trusted.
