I’m fascinated by the entire Peoples’ Temple story—it is truly hideous and spooky. I’m in my early 40s so was too young to remember the news of Jonestown and knew nothing of this until recently when I decided to research the story—I was so amazed to learn that Jim Jones was appointed by Moscone to the San Francisco Housing Authority.
I work in SF—I have a coworker (a black guy) who was invited to a Peoples’ Temple service when it was still in SF in the 1970s, and he went up the front steps with his friend and then declined, turned back, and went home after he saw Jim Jones standing there with those sunglasses and two bodyguards. He said no preacher should have bodyguards and he disliked the looks on their faces. . .he told me he’d be dead in Guyana had he joined that “church” and is grateful his instincts told him to stay away. . .
BOTH cured me of any leftist sympathies, and contributed to my philosophy that leftists are simply evil liars and thieves.
