MELBOURNE, Fla. A man who allegedly broke into a Melbourne home was killed Sunday morning when the homeowner shot him, police said.
The man was shot around 2:13 a.m. at a home in the 1100 block of Mathers Street. He was pronounced dead at Holmes Regional Medical Center. His name was not released.
The man was released from state prison less than a month ago and had a lengthy criminal history, said Sgt. Michael Casey of the Melbourne police.
Police are investigating and have not determined if any charges should be filed, Casey said.
No residents were injured.

To my somewhat distant relatives in Melbourne, I sure hope you are conservatives by now.
Greetings from Bobroisk via Baltimore.
Thanks for the alert......I can’ t place where Mathers Street is......Is it close to Mathers Bridge?
I did not know either but Mather’s Bridge connects on Merritt Island and would be Indian Harbor wouldn’t it? Satelitte Beach? Both have their own Police Forces.
Guess I need to look at a map.
Greetings back at ya!
I will be in the northern VA area by the end of the week.
Baltimore visits were for the Hockey games vs. Rochester.
Many years ago now, but they sure were competitive then. Guess I visited Baltimore Harbor once too.
Finally found it.
Booker T. Washington Park
It is in 2 parts separated by US1 ( says 19 properties, total?) No access off Harbor City, US1.
North of Aurora and access by turning south off Masterson St. ( both sides )
Small old homes (60’s) listed at $22-60K and some are 600 sq. ft. Found one pictured with chain link front fence and great need of repair. Demolition?)
The other 1/2 of the street seems to be newer and larger 1,600 sq.ft. and one sold over 100K in a listing.
The two parts must be very different.
Never been in that area, have you? Hope this helps.
NO?!....and I’ve been here a while
My cousin won a bronze medal in the Melbourne Olympics.
22 1/2 years out here on the beach for me!
I know there are lots of old cottage type areas in the area north of Old Melbourne. This is way north and some parts of the area near Aurora and before Wickham are very old areas. Roads were still dirt 20 years ago.
A HBC, I’d say (historically Black community). Think MLK Jr Blvd. From the paper that is named after the state plus not yesterday nor tomorrow but t____ and forbids posts and links: Oct 28, 2007: Violent Melbourne neighborhood prays for peaceful future.
Thanks!......I have an idea where that is now.
We really like our community & county.......a blessing to live here.
So good to know you all are nearby.......There are other Freepers quite close too!
This city and area is a wonderful place to live, I guess everywhere has places that are “depressed”! Glad I do not have to live or go there. I will remember to be thankful !
