The Houston school district board has given preliminary approval to a new policy that would prohibit offensive or culturally insensitive mascots.
The new policy calls on schools to show respect and cultural sensitivity in nicknames and mascots. The use of any race or ethnic group will be prohibited, the Houston Chronicle reported.

“Well, the University of California at Santa Cruz Banana Slugs offend me! Have you ever seen a banana slug? They are as big as a banana and disgusting.”
Have you ever been to UC SANTA CRUZ? The student body there all make Banana Slugs look positively inviting. Our daughter’s ex-husband went there, so we really understand that UCSC is the crap hole of the UC system which in and of itself is a sad truth.
You both make good points!
Funny thing — I have cousins who live in Santa Cruz and they have all turned out to be VERY conservative. Didn’t start out that way, but when they grew up...
It’s about time. I have always found Indians to be utterly and totally offensive
BORED with the Board
Never met a mascot that didn’t offend me—goes back to when I was a kid and the school I started out in called themselves the WheatRidge Farmers Most of them kids had NO idea what a real farmer was. And those schools that called themselves the Wildcats—or the Panthers aint no way none of them would have scat to do with the real thing. One school I went to even called themselves the Miners.Have you ever been down inside a mine. Those I’ve been in were cold enough my bones ached. And dark Love to see any of them try to shoot hoops — or play a single quarter of football in any of the mineshafts I’ve seen. And none of the kids I knew at that schools could have handled a shift in a mine. So I’m all with banning offensive mascots.Maybe part of my problem is the school ignored my suggestion we be known as the teenage skirt and booze chasers. Can you believe they ignored that excellent suggestion from one of their own?
Actually, that's HONORABLE Civil War connotations -- and she's a disgrace to both of those last names.
“The use of any race or ethnic group will be prohibited.”
So by those criteria, any mascot representing a human of any kind will be prohibited, I suppose. Every single one of us has a race and ethnicity, after all.
I suggest the Houston High Trayvons.
One of my first memories was the political purging of my elementary school’s mascot “Red Devils.” One of the local megachurches started that fight.
How about:
Katrina Refugees!!!
Yeah but where's the outrage in that?
