Johannesburg (AFP) - The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial ceremony denied he was a fraud Thursday, claiming he gesticulated nonsense during the service because he was suffering a schizophrenic episode and hallucinating.
Thamsanqa Jantjie has been branded a fraud by members of South Africa's deaf community, who said his signing for US President Barack Obama and other world leaders amounted to little more than "flapping his arms around."
Jantjie on Thursday insisted he was a qualified signer, but said his behaviour was down to a sudden attack of schizophrenia, for which he takes medication.

So let me get this straight.
A fake, schizophrenic signer stands within arms length of the President of the United States, and nobody in the Secret Service picks up on any of it.

My original thoughts about this were that the man was a Christian forced to interpret through coersion and couldn’t in right conscience sign the words of a truly evil man. Just my first impression.
The good thing is, between this and President Selfie’s selfie, people have stopped talking about how Nelson Mandela was the greatest man who ever lived (next to Obama, of course).
You do have a point there. Both of the instances are probably good for at least another point drop in Obama’s popularity polls.

Perhaps he was signing in tongues.
If he was signing in tongues there is a possibility that someone could actually understand it. I think he was actually saying “Help help help”
That’s what I would be saying up there anyway.
This makes me like Obama more. Now I can truly get a good laugh whenever I think about him.
