Yesterday I issued a heartfelt and personal statement about the passing of President Nelson Mandela. I said that his family and his country would be in my prayers and Callista’s prayers.
I was surprised by the hostility and vehemence of some of the people who reacted to me saying a kind word about a unique historic figure.
So let me say to those conservatives who don’t want to honor Nelson Mandela, what would you have done?
Mandela was faced with a vicious apartheid regime that eliminated all rights for blacks and gave them no hope for the future. This was a regime which used secret police, prisons and military force to crush all efforts at seeking freedom by blacks.
What would you have done faced with that crushing government?
What would you do here in America if you had that kind of oppression?

Everything? So blacks in South Africa enjoyed full rights and the same freedoms whites did? There was no secret police and nobody got jailed for opposing the government? Wow. Who knew?

His terror group probably killed more blacks than whites. They killed innocent people instead of government soldiers.
I have no way of knowing if that is right or wrong, but if history tells us anything it's that rebellions and guerilla wars tend to be more vicious than conventional wars. But if I'm faced with a life where I have no rights or freedoms, where my every move is controlled by a police state, and where there is little chance of it changing then I'm not sure I wouldn't fight against by oppressor using any means necessary.

Weren’t most civilians killed while he was in prison ? Violence would have happened from more radical groups anyway that would have made the ANC completely irrelevant.
In his book he admitted he signed off on those bombings/attacks. He was still leading the terror group from prison.

As the white population of South Africa was 4 434 697 according to the official state census in 1996, and more than 400 000 white South Africans have left the country, it could be estimated that nearly 2% of white South Africans have been murdered in the 18 years of democracy.
Compare that to the 7518 black people that were murdered by the Apartheid government, which comes to a percentage of 0.02% of the black population. (And no, you can’t compare people killed by the security forces with people killed by civilians, but I’m sure that if you look up white on black civilian murders during Apartheid, it would still be very low indeed. I’m not in the business of statistics - I’m trying to highlight the fact that it is a lie that the Apartheid government killed millions of blacks)
So, if anybody ever asks you how many black people were killed by white people in South Africa, you can tell them that black people have murdered roughly 100 times more white people in the last 63 years.

There were roughly 128 000 commercial farmers in South Africa in 1980. Today there are 40 000 commercial farmers left in South Africa.
Since 1994, more than 4000 farmers have been murdered and many more maimed, tortured, raped and assaulted.

We tried to tell you guys. Newt is low character and always will be. We all loved Newt going after the partisan moderators. That was awesome. But he is in no way a leader.

Well Doodledog the Blacks rights were not taken away because they never had them.
Many Blacks migrated to SA the same way illegals are coming here.
SA prison system did do a good job of rehabilitating Mr Mendela.

Thanks to Mandela, South Africa has not become one of the hell-holes found to the North....THE #1 Murder Capital of the world, NOT a hell hole? I think I’d take the Boers.
