Yesterday I issued a heartfelt and personal statement about the passing of President Nelson Mandela. I said that his family and his country would be in my prayers and Callistas prayers.
I was surprised by the hostility and vehemence of some of the people who reacted to me saying a kind word about a unique historic figure.
So let me say to those conservatives who dont want to honor Nelson Mandela, what would you have done?
Mandela was faced with a vicious apartheid regime that eliminated all rights for blacks and gave them no hope for the future. This was a regime which used secret police, prisons and military force to crush all efforts at seeking freedom by blacks.
What would you have done faced with that crushing government?
What would you do here in America if you had that kind of oppression?

Preferring the frying pan to the fire.
Perhaps, choosing NEITHER would have been better?
I agree with you.
Your posts on this thread have made it one of the most informative and thought provoking that I have read on this subject on the forum.
Thank you.
No. The Stanley Baker Movie - ZULU.
Geez. Wrong all around, for heaven's sake. This is very classy and ego-less and unembarrassing so far as Newt is concerned.
You can disagree with the position Gingrich took here and some of the judgment calls he makes about Mandela and still recognize that he shows some dignity and restraint here that others haven't always shown.
And how many times a day or week do we attack politicians for lacking guts? You could say Newt bowed to some liberal consensus in writing his original tribute, but the fact that he takes the time to defend himself and doesn't try to scurry away from the confrontation is admirable.
And what kind of fuel does he hand to anybody that wasn't there before he wrote this? So much has been written about this that anybody looking for ammunition already has it.
Not really your choice to make, though, is it?
“Free education and free healthcare and a good economy are all wonderful, but would you trade your full liberty and freedom for that.”
I think we, in this country, are about to find out. And not in a good way.
Exactly.
