The FBI can secretly activate a computer’s webcam to spy on an individual without turning on the indicator light, a former official revealed to the Washington Post in an article published Friday.
According to the Washington Post’s account of what Marcus Thomas — former assistant director of the FBI’s Operational Technology Division in Quantico — said, “The FBI has been able to covertly activate a computer’s camera — without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording — for several years, and has used that technique mainly in terrorism cases or the most serious criminal investigations.”

They can not only activate your mic and listen to your conversation, they can read all your texts, download your contact lists, read your emails, among other things. I know this for a fact from a “friend”.

Yes. Your camera should always be taped over unless you are deliberately using it.

Low tech way of dealing with that - put a piece of bubble gum over it ... :-) ...

The operative word is “mainly”. Perhaps, Jim, you are one outside of “mainly” and they have checked out watching you eat Chinese food.
I got this laptop in August of 2011 when my other one bit the dust at a time I had to have one right then. Computer guy told me to buy a Toshiba as the ones they were making right then were good ones. So, I rush to the store where he sent me and in about 10 minutes chose this one. I just didn’t have the time to research computers right then.
The point is, I DON’T KNOW IF THIS COMPUTER HAS A CAMERA ON IT. One of you guys tell me where to look to find out.
I THINK I FOUND THE CAMERA! There is a little round hole at the top of this computer and there is a plastic tab over that area that I have never removed - didn’t really see it until now. If there is a tab to pull off, it sounds like there must be a working camera in there. Right?

Is it a notebook or a desktop?
If it’s a notebook, look above your monitor on the panel.
You’ll see a monitor and hole for a microphone there.

I am not surprised...
The problem I see is that “they” are so busy listening, watching us, they miss the terrorists — e.g., the Tsarnaev brothers — Russia warned them multiple times, yet they ignored and clearly weren’t watching them or listening to them.

I see a small slit toward the left of the camera and thought maybe that turned it on but it doesn’t and maybe there is where somehow a microphone goes? But, I don’t see how.
HOW TO I TURN ON/OFF THE CAMERA? I see no one on the computer to do that around the screen, maybe it is on the keyboard??
I have mine covered with dark tape.
Does that do anything to stop this nonsense?
I’m not sure, but that’s what I used my Intel sticker for.

The top of my monitor is pretty narrow so I just turn it sideways and stick in on there, rather than where it was originally near the keyboard.
I’ve heard tape suggested as well.
