MILWAUKEE -- Frank Kruck was 7 when he saw his mother crying and fingering her rosary beads as she listened to the terrible news on the radio.
The announcement on a Sunday morning in December 72 years ago: Japanese planes had attacked Pearl Harbor, ships were burning, sailors and soldiers were wounded and dying. Frank's mother was praying for his brother Gene, a sailor aboard the minesweeper USS Widgeon.
It would be more than a week before the Western Union telegram was delivered to the Kruck family home in Waukesha: Gene was OK.

Turbo,
Thank you for posting this story.
My mother was living in Honolulu on that December 7. She was walking to work and watched the attack from a hill. She was young and single and had so many friends on those ships.
Great story. Thank you so much for posting.
After my great aunt died, I went through her old photo album looking for pictures and genealogy information. On one page was pasted a scrap of paper where she had written in pencil: “December 7, 1941...I just heard on KSOO(a local radio station still on the air) that the Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor.” She knew she was witnessing history and recorded the event. During the war she worked as a cook at a large Army Air Corps training base in Sioux Falls, SD.
you’re welcome.
I found it interesting.
I still have full newspapers from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Honolulu Star Bulletin both dated Dec.8, 1942
The headline alone takes up about half the front page.
Wonder what they are worth?
surprisingly, very little.
Might have to go see Big Rick from Pawn Stars.
I was just there. He’s hardly ever there and the store is small. Half the building is a sound stage made to replicate the shop.
Check ebay-it’ll give you a good idea of what you could get.
According to eBay, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin can be quite valuable, but there are several variants, and there are also repros around.
Here’s the one you want to have:

While thats the same newspaper, it’s not the same publishing. The one from eBay looks like a special print from that day. Mine are from the day after regular prints. Probably not quite as valuable as a special print and even if it was this guys sold for $515. For that much I’d just assume keep it.
I also kept the papers from VJ and VE days, moon landing, challenger and columbia disasters and 9/12 thinking they might be worth something one day. Most prized is the one about my hole in one. LOL
PHD Bump
Thanks for the ping!
