Elian Gonzalez, the focus of a bitter international custody dispute after he was rescued at sea as a child, left Cuba on Friday for the first time since 2000, when the U.S. government returned him to the island.
Gonzalez, who also turned 20 on Friday, traveled to Quito, Ecuador, as part of a 200-member Cuban delegation to a weeklong youth conference there.
"Fidel Castro for me is like a father," Gonzalez said in the recent interview. "I don't profess to have any religion but if I did my God would be Fidel Castro. He is like a ship that knew to take his crew on the right path."
Now a military cadet studying industrial engineering, Gonzalez said he would have suffered had he stayed in the United States.

My heart still breaks when I think of how he was kidnapped by US government thugs and returned to prison Cuba, when his Mother died to rescue him from that life.
Dear AM -- this may not technically be Frontpage news, but considering the huge story it was at the time, I think many people will be interested and that may make it of sufficient interest to put it in that category.
“I personally think he didn’t forget — he just knows that if he doesn’t tow the Castro line, he’s be in prison or dead. “
I think the same thing. And that 200 member cuban delegation, I’ll bet alot or most or all of them are tasked to make sure Elian doesnt make a run for it.
The USA is headed towards communism. If he was allowed to stay he would have the same brainwashing.
Probably not the most heinous or shameful act of the Clinton and his henchpersons — but certainly in the top ten.
Good catch.
His mother died in vain.
“”Fidel Castro for me is like a father,””
What happened to his real father, the one NAZI Reno used storm troopers facilitate his return?
Poor kid. So close to having a chance at a real life. The chance his mother died for.
Indeed, may God have mercy on all of the United States, because soon, we may all be worse off than Cuba is now.
May God judge the men in that picture ever so severely. Elian Gonzales’ eternal soul is on them.
They sure tried to make him look matinee-idol pretty, but you can’t hide those angry dead eyes. Something tells me his life in Cuba hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses, and he’s compelled to speak as if it has been.
Someday....
Due Obedience is not a defense
Yes, the eyes... it’s true that the eyes are the windows of the soul — he didn’t forget.
Don’t forget those who gave the orders... Clinton and Reno.
This must break his US family’s heart. What a shame.
He's probably already got his uLEO pension and working a second job, like teaching children, so he can get another public service pension.
Or maybe he does what other retired cops do. Join organizations like the TEA Party and surveil the group, you godsend of liberty.
