Six-term Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) will run for reelection next year, POLITICO has confirmed.
The second most-senior Republican in the Senate guarded his decision so closely that even Senate leaders and top officials at the National Republican Senatorial Committee didnt know what he was planning until he shared it with the press. He kept the political world waiting for his decision throughout the fall: he originally said hed make his decision by the end of November, but that deadline passed with no word from the veteran senator.
He first shared his decision in an interview with Gannett on Friday morning.
State insiders largely expected Cochran, who turns 76 on Saturday, to step down: campaign finance records show he raised just $53,000 in the third quarter of this year, not the kind of sum expected for a senator the fall before a reelection battle. Cochran had $804,000 on hand at the end of September.
Cochran will face a primary challenge from state Sen. Chris McDaniel, a conservative state lawmaker who announced he was running for the seat earlier this fall. State observers say Cochran, with his long history in the state, should have little trouble getting reelected despite the challenge from McDaniel hell have the support of the GOP establishment.
Andy Taggart, an attorney and veteran Republican in the state, said he believes Cochran will handily defeat McDaniel in the states June 3, 2014, primary.
[Cochran] has served honorably and well he has no political enemies in the state, he said.

Ping.
Here’s what we have been hearing on the radio in print.
I just heard it during Rush’s first news break.
More like 36 years. I think this will be his seventh term.
If I still lived in northeast Jackson ...my youth....I imagine issues like this would have trimmed my dance card.
Less invites to cocktail parties and dove hunts at Bozeman farms
Thad “Poster Boy for Democrat Collaboration” needs to be removed from office, defeated in the Primary, or simply retire.
We don’t need these types of traitors in our midst.
This might be good in that a crowded primary field with a number of conservatives could have allowed a less conservative candidate to squeak through. As it is it will be an up or down vote.
OK folks, remember that talk is cheap. In addition to talking up McDaniel we also need to support his primary campaign in any way possible.
The corportists will back him because he brings the Sugar Teat back home.
I agree.
Here’s Chris McDaniel’s campaign site. Let’s support him as much as we can.
