Paul Walker’s dad begged him to stop ‘daredevil’ ways

Late actor Paul Walker’s dad urged him to give up his “daredevil” ways during the last conversation he ever had with his son.

“I sat there, I looked at him and I said, ‘You know, I love you very much… If anything was to happen to anybody in this family, it would be a rough deal,’” the actor’s dad, Paul Walker Sr., told E! in a heart-wrenching interview.

“I said, ‘Promise me, no more daredevil stuff.’ I said, ‘If in your heart, you say, I can do this, then by all means, do it. If your mind says, maybe not. Then don’t.’ I looked at him, I said, ‘Will you promise me that?’” he said.

What’s really dumb is that this guy could have rented one of the many race tracks in Cali and driven the wheels off his Porsche.

The good news is he didn’t take any innocent bystanders with him.

When I saw the video of the father crying, I knew he was “off.” I would not want my dad talking like this if I were Paul Walker.

Does it really make a difference which rich guy was at the wheel? Stupid is stupid, right?

My wife and I were talking about this. I have a couple of friends with high performance cars (Lamborghini, Nissan GTR, etc.) and they’ll take me for a ride when we’re together. Only once have I felt uncomfortable (meaning I shouldn’t be in this car right now) and it’s because my friend’s judgement is poor. I won’t ride with him anymore and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes out the same way as Paul Walker...

I also have a lower powered RWD car which I bought specifically because of its thrill capacity and lack of traction control/driving nannies. I told my wife that I think about that every time I go for a drive. Could I drive faster and corner harder? Yes. But, I remind myself of the consequences if I were to lose control and that keeps me in check. As soon as you choose to override the threat of consequences in the pursuit of adrenaline, you chance making the last decision of your life.

I raced in SCCA in the 70s.

It taught me that the gap between racing and driving safely on the road is huge.

Kids do stupid stuff all the time, but rich guys like this can easily satisfy their need for speed on the track. James Dean got killed in a Porsche in California in 1955. Some lessons have to be learned over and over.

Uh, Paul was a passenger, not the driver.

As Hillary would say, does it really matter which stupid rich guy was at the wheel? They’re both dead, right? The good news is no bystanders were killed.

Patrick Dempsey seems to have this figured out. Drive cool classics on the road for fun...take the race cars to the track for thrill seeking.

My wife knows I’d be on the track of we had the money!

I think he’s following the example of Paul Newman. Who despite being a liberal Democrat was a fairly bright guy.
