For all the hand-wringing over how many drones is too many drones, there’s one job for which they would appear to be perfectly suited: hunting pigs.
The best article in the new issue of the Economist is a short piece about an outfit called Louisiana Hog Control that hunts pigs at night using a remote controlled plane outfitted with an infrared camera. Hunters on the ground, informed by the bright white blobs of porcine body heat illuminated on their video feeds, can then sneak up on the clever and twitchy critters and dispatch them to hog heaven.On a successful hunt the body count of wild hogs can reach into the dozens. By the looks of the pics and video posted by Louisiana Hog Control on its Facebook page, the pig-shooting weapon of choice is the AR-15 and its variants. And to think the gun-control lobby still insists that no one needs such weapons for hunting!
The article in the Economist, by Chicago correspondent Natasha Loder, rightly asserts that feral pigs are more than just a nuisance across the south, causing $1.5 billion in damage to crops and land. Exterminating them is encouraged by a year-round open season. And although scouting and killing other game, like deer or elk, from the air is often verboten, there’s no rules protecting the pigs.
Naturally, some bleeding hearts object to wonton high-tech pig slaughter. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission is considering whether or not to ban hunters from deploying drones in their pig shoots.
Really? Anyone who objects to hunters using a remote-controlled airplane to pigs doesn’t appreciate the damage that these pests cause. Besides, it’s not as if these drones are actually outfitted with guns (though that’s not a bad idea).

Well isn’t that nice. These hog hunting techies will get lots of practice for hunting Christians in the woods later when they try to escape the camps.
I’ve seen a few roving packs of pigs here in Oklahoma. And they were running along the Indian Nation Turnpike, too - which can be quite dangerous for the drivers. I say - “Go for it!”
My guess is that most of these UAV hog hunters are good old Christian boys...probably southern baptists and would rather hunt feral government pigs than Christians.

The next time we leave our state to go camping with our Airstream trailer, I’ll be packing my new crossbow. I love helping out. LOL
I believe that if those who are being, or have been plagued by wild hogs would offer “free” hunting for hogs, the population would go down fairly quickly. Charging enormous fees just to kill “predators’ seems counter productive. On the other hand, those folks need to make a living and get paid for the property destruction.
Comes the Collapse when the grocery trucks cease to roll the feral pig population (porculation?) will disappear along with all the other wild critturs and tame ones, too, that can’t stay totally out of sight.
In my area of Georgia the farmers have absolutely no problem letting us hunt hogs on their property. No fees at all.
The problem you get is where the hogs are rooting up the tulip bulbs in the new subdivisions, and one nosy nellie calls the cops when she hears a rifle shot.
Substitute “conservative” with “pig” and ask why hussein is bragging about getting pretty good at killing people.

I don’t. But I know plenty of family and friends who like a good pig roast.
We have Black mouth yellow curs. When I tell them in strident tones that they were not bred to be throw pillows but should be out hunting hogs or running cattle they give me a glance of haughty disdain and turn away with an aloofness which is almost a canine version of the cut direct.
