Complete Headline: Japan Dispatches F-15s, E-767s And P-3 Into China's Air Defense Zone, China Scrambles Su-30 In Response

China's escalation and re-escalation described in detail yesterday, has just been met with a corresponding re-re-escalation by Japan.

And now it's China's turn to, once again, respond. And then Japan and the US again, and so on, until someone gets hurt.

Probably nothin’ serious. Lurch will be negotiating the terms for the US’ unconditional surrender any minute now. Thanks Zakeet.

They are not worthless. The ocean around them is oil rich.

>>A game of chicken between countries over some worthless islands.<<

Not so worthless. Both China and Japan know there is needed energy underneath the ocean floor.

Japan imports the majority of their oil, China’s thirst for oil has grown double digits as their economy continues to mature.

It’s all about the oil and gas.

Chinas basic objectives are access to oil and expelling the US Navy from the western Pacific.

She wants our guys tooling around near wake and maybe even Hawaii.

She sees weakness in our prez and I believe the prez might see this ad a fantastic source of distraction. For that reason ONLY I think we might see a robust US response, maybe.

Venturer, It isn’t only about ‘some worthless islands’ but control of the sea and air lanes that cross the East China Sea. this is a huge area between China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. It is an area of 482,000 square miles. Here is the area in dispute: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_China_Sea

It is also the claiming of ownership of an area that is beyond the internationally agreed 12 mile limit. Imagine if the USA said, “We own the entire Gulf of Mexico and countries could not send aircraft or ships into its area without out our permission.

And tie this into their claims of ownership of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. a group of islands closer to the Philippines than China.

China is flexing it’s muscles.

They have a centuries-old blood feud, they'll fight over anything... and while the islands are not important, it is the massive oil and natural gas fields beneath them that matter... and Japan is (wisely) flexing as well, and hopefully they use the coming war as an excuse to change their Constitution. 60+ years of letting the US be their primary defense is enough. Let them take on China without our boys being put in the middle.

Don,

You are thinking of the South China Sea area and the Spratly Islands, near the Philippines. See my post # 12. and this fairly accurate Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_disputes_in_the_South_China_Sea

Although there may very well be oil in the East China Sea as well, I believe this is more of China moving it’s “border” several hundred miles to the east

I think you both are confusing the new East China Sea dispute with the old South China Sea dispute, which is over control of the oil rich area surrounding the Spratly Islands, near the Philippines. However, you are both correct, China is flexing its muscles in response to a weakening USA as part of bh0’s mission of ‘fundamental transformation.’

China is setting Obama up for another US stand-down with the hegemony of the East Pacific at stake.
