” when I found out it wasn’t coming, I ate the whole box at once and got sick to my stomach. “

That explains it ! As a mere lad you developed a deep visceral aversion to anything comet related . Compounded by a profound chocolate overdose .

I’m curious , do you still enjoy chocolate ? ;^)

Maybe so but I don't spend any time in the Indian Ocean so I guess I missed it. I don't think it is right that a comet should only be seen from some remote corner of the Earth that nobody ever goes to except some oil tankers or Navy ships.

I would just like to take the opportunity here to register my disapproval and bewilderment.

we really had our hopes up out here !

Maybe some small spray of residual particles will fortuitously fall ?
One can always hope . Nothing is impossible for God !

I have never heard that song before, that was appropriate. Hmmm, I could reply with either

The Great Gig in the Sky, because it does the mumbling thing too, or

Space Junk

Hyakutake was not as bright as Hale-Bopp, but it had a spectacular near earth passage, presenting as a wide bright bluish band which spanned a large portion of the sky, moving perceptibly over a span of minutes. It was a unique spectacle.

Ok, so... where did it go?

Mass just does not dissappear

Even if it vaporized it still has mass in the form of vapor. You can still see SOMETHING following the trajectory after it passes the sun

I expect it was torn to shreds, but where did those shreds go?

If some of them got sucked into the sun I would expect the remaining debri not to follow the original path (it would have changed trajectory outward as it lost mass inward)

Comet West in 1976 made Hale Bopp and Hyakutake look like a little spark. West was like a flaming basketball held at arms length. Bigger than Hyakutake and brighter than Venus.

Look it up.

Also, looks like Ison may have surviced!

I saw hale-bopp and it was pretty spectacular

I had to go far out away from the city to see it, but when I looked up I was floored! it tool up a good fifth of the sky and was gigantic

If you didnt go out to see it you missed something worth seeing. I actually drove home, woke up the kids and MADE them come see it. They all went “WOW” when they saw it

Yeah, your basic ‘’dirty snowball’’(comet) gets to near your basic nuke reactor ( the Sun) in space and it’s like ice cubes in a microwave.

RE: “I haven't seen a decent comet display since Bennet in ‘69.”

I can't recall that.

How did it compare to Hale-Bopp in 1997?

Of course, this means we are about to be hit by a very, very large shot of space steam, melting everything on the planet...but it could be worse....

If we burn our wings
Flying too close to the sun
If the moment of glory
Is over before it’s begun
If the dream is won -
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

CANCEL THE EULOGY ... FOR NOW: Comet ISON flew through the sun’s atmosphere on Nov. 28th and the encounter did not go well for the icy comet. Just before perihelion (closest approach to the sun) the comet rapidly faded and appeared to disintegrate. This prompted reports of ISON’s demise. However, a fraction of the comet might have survived.
