In Terry Gilliam's 1977 movie Jabberwocky, the cooper cut off his foot so he would make more money as a beggar. Life imitates art.

Needle used by someone HIV positive would probably be the surest way.
Its really not funny. One of the worst headlines of the 21st century. All on the govt that we still don’t see them prosecuting.

Supposedly there are grossly over weight people in Oregon who are doing the same thing.
I saw one who was so big, he had to turn sideways to get on the elevator.
Then I thought...maybe I should get off on this floor.

I have heard that in the olden days when unwanted babies were left exposed to die, some would take them and cripple them on purpose and raise them to be beggars.

Not sure a “sub-culture” as simply one of the stages of grief they all go through.

Interestingly, during the 1980’s, AIDS didn’t appear in Greece until long after it had appeared elsewhere. Today, the AIDS infection rate in Greece is lower than it is in other countries, including the UK.

In Easter Europe there were/are some who would maim their children to send them out begging. More sympathy that way. And if they came back without money, even more harsh treatment from their “parents”.
How many of Greece’s HIV cases are adults vs. minors?
To: markomalley
it is a form of suicide since the family gets a the death pension.

Actually, art imitating life. It was quite common in some past communities for beggar parents to damage their children in order to increase revenues.
