NSA infected 50,000 computer networks with malicious software

The American intelligence service - NSA - infected more than 50,000 computer networks worldwide with malicious software designed to steal sensitive information. Documents provided by former NSA-employee Edward Snowden and seen by this newspaper, prove this.

A management presentation dating from 2012 explains how the NSA collects information worldwide. In addition, the presentation shows that the intelligence service uses ‘Computer Network Exploitation’ (CNE) in more than 50,000 locations. CNE is the secret infiltration of computer systems achieved by installing malware, malicious software.

One example of this type of hacking was discovered in September 2013 at the Belgium telecom provider Belgacom. For a number of years the British intelligence service - GCHQ – has been installing this malicious software in the Belgacom network in order to tap their customers’ telephone and data traffic. The Belgacom network was infiltrated by GCHQ through a process of luring employees to a false Linkedin page.

If you see your system kind of slow down when you are typing or loading then you should be suspicious that you have something on your computer.

I wonder how man Blue Screens of Death and dead computers they’ve produced over the years? Maybe I should sue them for all the computers I’ve had to buy.

I didn’t see it reported in the story, but have read some anti-virus companies (McAfee for instance) purposely do not detect this threat.

I seem to recall a few years back that a backdoor had been found that had purposefully been put in to the ‘Doze OS for the NSA to use at its discretion. Lots of softies took a look at the code in question and verified that a backdoor had indeed been placed. People seem to have forgotten about that, but it raised quite a stink at the time.

There is some small comfort in the fact that the NSA is itself being hacked and all their secrets bared. (Snowden)

NSA is simply too large to not have numerous leaks. It must drive them nuts suspecting everyone and everything.

Too bad that the original and legitimate purposes of the NSA are also being undermined...NSA should have remained within the original mandate.

I’m reasonably sure these are all criminal acts.

The only safe assumption since the discovery of NSAKEY in Windows NT SP5 is that any version of the Windows operating system has a back door available to the NSA. If one is well versed in computer cryptology and a good enough software engineer to understand the Linux source code, that operating system might be secure from the NSA.

The NSA may have approached Linus Torvalds to compromise Linux.

Yes, and anyone still think investing in the stock market is not totally rigged in favor of “insiders” who can get NSA information on virtually any company in the world?
