The unhappy few of Americans who still think national health insurance is a good idea might learn something from Australias experience with a national systemnot so much about how to design a workable system, but about the political struggles that must occur before one finally emerges. Australia had the rudiments of a welfare state well before the United States, and its first comprehensive proposal for national health insurance dates from 1938, but the final battle over a program really began in 1972 when a Labor government took power.
Australia has two major political parties: Labor, which is similar to the British Labor Party, and the Liberal Party, which is similar to the British Tories, and which works in coalition with several minor parties. In 1972, Gough Whitlams Labor government proposed a national health care system, dubbed Medibank, to provide free public hospital care and to defray the cost of other medical services. Australians could still supplement Medibank with private insurance that would allow them to stay in private hospitals and be cared for by the physician of their choice. Medibank was roughly similar to Americas Medicare system, but applied to all ages.
Australia elects its prime ministers on a parliamentary vote, but it is a federation like the United States, and it elects state governments and a second national chamber, a senate, in which each state has an equal vote regardless of its population. Labor controlled the lower House, which is based on population, but Liberals controlled the Senate and were able to block implementation of Medibank.

Excuse me .. we used to have SLAVERY .. but it was repealed too. There is no reason or excuse good enough to keep this monstrous Obamacare alive.
I sure hope the repeal of Obamacare won’t be as bloody as the repeal of slavery...
Hello Republicans! Harry Reid just nuked things and can’t a simple majority kill the ACA? Do it! Do it now so that those up for re-election will have to vote to kill it.
The gimedats will be very mad when we do repeal it. When we do it the CBC and the two reverends need to go first.

Obamacare will be repealed when hundreds, thousands and maybe even tens of thousands of folks being killed by obamacare towards the end of January when they no longer have medical insurance or medical care from their doctors because obamacare cancelled their insurance and they were unable to obtain comparable insurance or medical care.
I’m talking about chronically ill people who are being kept alive by highly specialized treatments by highly specialized doctors in highly specialized treatment centers. You don’t treat cancer, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, childhood genetic diseases, and thousands of other such diseases in the ER.
Those are the people who will truly suffer and die because their existing insurance has been cancelled and they are unable to sign up for new insurance , or unable to afford new insurance, or are offered only policies that no longer include their existing specialized care givers.
We need a new, non-profit organization formed to pay to have the poor souls who will start dying because of obamacare maintain a 24x7 vigil in front of the White House starting 1/1/2014.
That’ll get obamacare repealed faster than anything else.
Obama and the Democrats are going to have blood on their hands if they persist in trying to implement their totally unworkable legislation when it starts to kill innocent children. We need to show the nation that blood so we can end this horror.
Michele Bachmann came up with something as a repeal idea that has a good possibility of gaining support. I saw it as the best approach brought up so far.
You repeal all of Obamacare mandates but leave the exchanges in place to compete with them if they can.
Call it competition.
Once that is successful you fight to cut funding to exchanges and medicaid
Total repeal at once will always be beaten back simply because it will be seen as talking away Americans health care, which is what is killing Obama and Dems now.
Speaking of slavery and the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, go here to read an excellent article..http://www.aarp.org/politics-society/history/info-04-2011/8-ways-civil-war-changed-lives.print.html Now, black people who are only 13% of our population can be found disproportionate to their numbers in every profession and every walk of life, thanks to the Republicans and to President Lincoln. At least half the time when I see an ad on TV, a black person or family is featured..Almost every time I see a discussion on the news, the commentators have equal representation between black and white. Look at sports, look at the entertainment industry, look at the legal profession, medical, academic, theological..And, finally, look at the richest woman in the world, Oprah Winfrey and then, look at the White House. And, still they charge racism, mostly against those who freed them..The Republicans. I cannot get over Oprah’s comments about having old, white Southern people die to stop racism when racism, in my view and experience, has been stopped and is a false battering ram for something (I can’t imagine what)far more sinister, which Oprah wants to achieve..Why is she so bitter when white people have lifted her to heights unheard of for 99.99% of humanity. Do others see this as I do?
Sounds doable---especially when we get the dizzy Dems subdued.
Yeah, I pray about that too.
