“While the story does not say why the traffic stop occurred, lets be clear, the Police can pull over anybody at any time they want. is far to easy to create a stop when the traffic regs are so huge that you couldn’t print them all out and fit them in the back of a Police cruiser.”
My wife complained to our former chief of police (and former friend) about the fact that a cop could follow a citizen for a couple of miles and find some “legal reason” to pull him or her over. The chief said that it wouldn’t take a block. Kinda’ reinforces what you are saying doesn’t it!
Yup. The dirty little secret is that traffic laws are used to subvert the 4th Amendment every single day. It’s what they are for.
They can arbitrarily pull over anyone, anytime. They'll say they saw a swerve, sudden change in speed, thought he saw the driver texting, anything. They can use any one of a dozen excuses to "make contact" and then they immediately go in to evidence collection mode looking for anything they can charge you with.
I'm not usually this cynical (ok, sometimes)... But far too many LEOs think their primary job is to write tickets and make arrests. So that is all they are out there to do. They have completely lost sight of that whole "protect and serve" thing, and are focused on a couple aspects of their job.
I think in some places you are supposed to use the blinker to get into your own driveway and most people probably never do this.
