Retirement Signals for Thad Cochran?
National Journal ^ | 11/12/2013 | Hotline Staff

Mississippi GOP Sen. Thad Cochran announced he will be deciding his re-election plans at the end of the month, amid growing signs that the six-term senator could be heading for the exits.

Cochran, the second longest-serving Republican in the upper chamber, is facing the prospect of a competitive Republican primary. An outspoken conservative leader in the Mississippi legislature, state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R), announced a primary against the incumbent last month. Cochran raised only $53,000 in the last fundraising quarter -- a paltry sum for the longtime appropriator.

Announcing at the end of the month would mean Cochran would be publicizing his decision during a slow Thanksgiving week, not an ideal time to launch a reelection campaign.

For now, Cochran is focused on passing a farm bill through Congress in a state that receives a large share of agricultural subsidies. He's one of four lead negotiators on the legislation.

"Just trying to do a good job right now. I'm not focused on the future right now-just carrying out my current responsibilities. That's a full time job," Cochran told WTVA-TV.

The analysis seems solid. Thad's planned announcement in the thick of Thanksgiving indicates he is not trying to draw attention and will fade into retirement.

Very good news since we can focus cash and manpower against other RINO opponents such as Linseed Graham and Mitch McConnell. If Cochran does retire, there will be a primary (a couple of other state GOPers want in), but McDaniel has already built up his poll numbers to a point where he would be a shoe-in for the open seat.

By the end of the month, we'll know if the senate conservative caucus will increase by 1 at the expense of the RINOS.

Tate Reeves is another likely one to jump in if Thad retires.

A distant relative from another county told me yesterday that former democrat congressman travis childress, lost to Alan Nunnelee R, will run in the democrat primary if cochran does not seek re-election.

Childers will probably run again with the same results. He has been beaten twice, once as an incumbent, by Alan Nunnelee. I doubt he would fare better in a statewide race.

I would hope tarvis would lose any election he runs in. I voted for congressman Nunnelee in the general elections but not in the primaries. Many in Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District will not vote for someone who lives “North of the Coldwater” meaning from DeSoto county for Congress, that’s one reason I didn’t vote for Davis in the primary, I didn’t believe he could beat childers. I have never or would never vote for travis childers or jim hood.

Tate Reeves cannot be trusted, he ran opposing illegal immigration and supporting legislation that would help Mississippi to combat the illegal problem. The legislation passed the House but Reeves gave it a committee headed by a democrat, hob bryan, that Reeves appointed to head that committee and bryan sat on it and let it die. Reeves did this to kill the legislation and he thought we were to stupid to connect him to it. Reeves appointed bryan to head that committee even though Reeves could appoint a Republican chair to every Senate committee and a majority on every committee. I supported Tate Reeves for Lt. Gov., BIG MISTAKE.

I support Senator McDaniel as well. I believe the whole thing about “The Party” and their apparent disdain for Senator McDaniel is that he is a real Conservative and doesn’t just play lip-service to issues such as amnesty and illegal immigrants, reduced federal spending, Second Amendment and the sprawl of big government and federal control of states. I like Secretary Hosemann, he has done an excellent job as Secretary of State but where is he on these other issues? I would give any of them more credibility if they were to have at least criticized Cochran before. They say they will run if Cochran doesn’t. What I take from that is “job well done, I’ll continue doing what Thad did”.
