“As much as we might wish, they cannot replace human beings in our lives.”

I beg to differ. I would much, much rather be with my dog than about 6 billion other people, the vast majority of whom hate me because (1) I’m an American; (2) I am a male; (3) I am a Christian; (4) I am heterosexual; (5) I am a gun owner. My dog sees absolutely nothing wrong with any of the five.

I think you just made my point. You are trying to substitute a dog (a very fine dog, I am sure, as is mine…though mine is surely the smartest dog, ever) for people. Lord help us, we certainly try. And our pets are a great comfort and pleasure, when people are not.

But, finally, they just can't replace what we should have from human beings.
