Cheap - very effective anti personnel deterrent
Take a small atomizer bottle
Fill it mainly with water but add two tablespoons of ammonia and a small amount of liquid dish washing soap.
The mist has a range of about 2 feet and will put someone on the ground.
If you can’t get bear spray this is a good make-do replacement. It also has the advantage of just being “soap” so it is not illegal but I guarantee you could rob a store with it.

I’ve always wished somebody would sell anhydrous ammonia in a small areosol bottle the way they sell Mace. A faceful of that stuff will incapacitate any large mammal. You could take down a coked-up Mike Tyson with it. I used to run a diazo process printmaker, so I know of what I speak. My workstation was by a window that kept open year-round. If I wanted to keep the boss away I would simply vent a couple milligrams of gas into the room. My desk area would be clear but the rest of the room was a gas chamber.
