However, she is conservative and monitors Twitter comments.

Oh, well by all means let us all hold her up as better than us.

She reads Twitter, after all. How much more awesome could she be?

What?

She actually POSTS little comments on Twitter as well?

Well, that settles that. She's far more awesome than anyone.

Excuse me now while I go build a shrine to her.

Happy Chanukkah!

My understanding is that it starts next week. On Thursday if I am not mistaken.

There is no Holy Family. Only Jesus is Holy. Her name was Mary and she is as mortal as anyone.

I was reminded of

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

1 Peter 1:15-16 (cf. Levitcus 11:44, 11:45, 19:2).

Whatever was true of Mary, this Holy Family also includes Joseph, who hasn't been alleged too often to have been sinless, as opposed to Jesus. (Here I'm assuming that the root issue is sinfulness and not mortality, which I can see as a related but comparatively secondary issue.)

Even so, Matthew calls him a "just" man, and presumably the idea of a Holy Family sprung in part (though probably not primarily) from that description.

Any stamps for non-Catholics?

I haven't heard objections in my experience to the existing ones.

It doesn't hurt that the one named "Holy Family" is nowhere labeled as such on the stamp itself, and in fact I can imagine it (even if this was not at all the actual intent) as a contrast to the Madonna and Child ones. (While the subject of the stamp should be obvious--especially with "Christmas" on it--the details of the human figures are less obvious; it's closer to something aniconic than either Madonna and Child stamp is.)

what do you envision of such a stamp?

The point remains: why, since the USPS has Christmas stamps, did it not advertise in its flier a stamp with a recognizably Christmas image and the name Christmas on the stamp, as it did with the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stamps pictured in its flier?

Are you off your meds? Who is holding her up to a shrine?

I know you. You are just “offended” because she has a BLOG, OMG.

"So the point remains: why have a flier with Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stamps prominently named as such while omitting a named Christmas stamp?"

Probably for the reason you think.

We have large collection of early world Christmas stamps that I acquired for my wife. In the first half of the 20th century Christmas stamps were not that common. Collected Christmas Seals as well and have every issue from 1907 and full sheets from around 1929 to the 1970s. Fun stuff!

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,
et exsultávit spíritus meus
in Deo salvatóre meo,
quia respéxit humilitátem
ancíllæ suæ.

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child . . . Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God . . . None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.

(Commentary on the Magnificat, 1521; in Luther’s Works, Pelikan et al, vol. 21, 326)
