(AL) Several Decatur, Morgan & Limestone Schools Dismiss Due to Suspicious Package Near Daikin Plant
WHNT News (Local Affiliate) ^ | 21 NOV 2013 | Claire Aiello

Several schools in Decatur, Morgan County and Limestone County are dismissing due to a suspicious situation at the Daikin facility on Highway 20.

Police say a suspicious device was found attached to a rail car at the facility. The rail car contains hazardous material. No other information about the train car involved or the nature of the device was immediately available.

Police say the estimated potential danger zone is 25 miles. Current weather conditions indicate that the greatest danger area would be to the northeast should an explosion occur. The intersection of State Docks Road and Highway 20 West can be used as a reference point.

yep, I use to work for Union Pacific in Omaha before having kids. Both in the EAP department with all the engineers, brakemen etc being counseled for drugs and alcohol addictions . . .then in the law department. Not for the faint of heart.

Probably just coincidence, but there was an explosion at small pyrotechnics factory about 30 miles to the East this morning, Owens Cross Road area of Madison County, Al

It is indeed an EXTREMELY busy day up and down the Tennessee River today.

Didn’t they have a huge fire/explosion a few years ago and maybe a death or two or three over in the Owens Cross Road area or New Hope?

From the live blog...
Decatur Police Lt. John Crouch said the rail car the package is attached to contains hydrogen flouride, which is a hazardous material. Police still aren’t certain what the package contains, so that’s why they are exercising precaution.

Within 5 miles of this plant:

BP Chemicals
Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.
United Launch Alliance/Boeing Rocket Motor plant.
3M
Micor
Hexcel Chemicals

20 Miles to the East, directly in line with normally prevailing winds, Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center.

Yes, this has a LOT of folk’s attention.

I hope this is a false alarm. The wind rarely blows from the Southeast to the Northwest. It is today. And that puts Brown’s Ferry Nuclear Plant directly in the path, just across the river.

That is a BAAAAAAAD coincidence.

Yep! We usually get what I call ‘the whiff of the river’ when the wind is just right out of the NW. Sometimes can even smell the Meow Mix plant while they’re ‘roasting’. LOL!

I don’t recall either, just seems like it was there and right around the 4th of July. They were just showing the wind direction on 19 for the noon news from the Daikin plant towards Limestone County and Browns Ferry. Still no new details.

I have worked in this plant. The potential for catastrophic damage exists, but the probability is extremely low. I’m guessing your daughter is a ChemE student. She will be fine working there. Daikin is a good company.
