Big game backlash: Protests against celebrity hunter Melissa Bachman mount

More than 250,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that South Africa deny future entry to Melissa Bachman, a big game hunter whose smiling photo with a dead lion has sparked considerable outrage.

The petition, launched by Cape Town resident Elan Burman, includes a letter addressed to Director General Mkuseli Apleni and other South African officials.

"She is an absolute contradiction to the culture of conservation this country prides itself on," Burman wrote. "Her latest Facebook post features her with a lion she has just executed and murdered in our country. As taxpayers we demand she no longer be granted access to this country and its natural resources."

According to Change.org, Burman's petition has 257,753 supporters. A Facebook group called "Stop Melissa Bachman" has more than 148,000 "likes."

"Stop the murder of wildlife for the sport," a message on the group's Facebook page reads. "Stop Melissa Bachman and people like her from pulling the trigger.

"An incredible day hunting in South Africa!" Bachman, a Minnesota native, wrote on Facebook and Twitter Nov. 1. "Stalked inside 60 yards on this beautiful male lion ... what a hunt!"

Big game hunting in Africa has long been criticized by animal rights activists, but proponents say the money hunters spend during their trips boosts the local economy, and supports conservation projects.

According to Grind TV, Bachman killed the lion during a guided hunt facilitated by the Maroi Conservancy. And according to Maroi, the hunt was perfectly legal.

“We do ethical hunting and all meat from animals hunted is distributed to the local community," a post on Maroi's Facebook page reads. "Funds generated from hunting goes towards fixing the border fence that was washed away in the 2013 floods, combating poaching, which is excessive in this area due to close proximity to Zimbabwe,

“I kinda have to agree with you. It upset me to look at that beautiful big cat like that. I suppose people do it, but I think it was kind of sick to take pictures and post them. To each his own, I guess.”

An important aspect of freedom is allowing people to do things you disagree with in expectation that they will do the same for you. Its what separates us from the Leftists.

Funny how you liberals can be so sentimental when it is not your children being dragged off for a quick meal.

Just for everyone’s amusement-
I just noticed that your posting name has Impala in it. Isn’t it a bit ironic that you of all people would post this rant because Impala’s are one of the main food sources of lions in the wild.
I certainly wouldn’t want a big bad lion to do that to any impala’s. I suppose that’s one lion that won’t be hunting / stalking impalas to make them their next meal.
What say you?

I believe that was what my post reflected. It isn’t what I like, but she does, and that is that.

Is there going to be a swimsuit issue?

Doubt it. Besides, the lion would probably look funny in a speedo...

>> You don’t kill a lion for food,

Rest assured, that lion got eaten. The meat may not be quite to North American tastes, but the Africans like it just fine. AND ... somebody else paid them for the privilege of killing it. There's money in them thar lions, and the Africans ain't dumb. They have a vested interest in making sure their lions make more lions, so rich Americans will come to Africa and pay them for the privilege of killing one.

Bachman can rot. Let me guess. This “great hunter” used a high powered scope and was protected by a platoon of body guards with high powered rifles in case the lion so much as looked in her direction. She must be so proud. Just another jerk who gets their kicks by killing one of God’s creations.

Is this FR? Hunting is good. You need to be somewhere else.

Kill it to preserve it? ...really?

Too bad that big boy can no longer pass down those magnificent genes.

And if you start off calling me names, you lose.

Most Game Ranches know enough to not kill their prize stud!

And if you think the big money laid out for this hunt went to build a fence or help the poor, I have a healthcare website you can buy cheap health insurance.

And you are are another ignorant one. Go back to DU, or learn what is happening before commenting on it.

The meat is used.

Is she going to eat that lion? Otherwise there is little use for such hunting.

“There’s no reason to kill to eat” You are wrong. What I kill is ten times more healthy to eat than anything you buy in a store.

+1

I kill to eat. I am proud of it; as God once gave man the green plants, he now gives us everything. I give thanks every time I kill an animal on the hunt. No joke, for real.

Also, I have friends at a consumer-supported farm who do the killing for me. I eat their pasture-raised chicken, pork, and goat. And it is GOOD!

So who made you an expert at gauging prized lion flesh for stud services? It may be that particular lion was the dumbest male of the pride? He certainly wasn’t the one that got away.
Sorry, but your argument is all wet, conservation has saved many species of wildlife. It has paid for a lot of habitat that would have otherwise been turned into a parking lot.

Why not hunt predators?

They would do the same for you. Silly human, you are just meat to them.

Keeping predator populations under control is essential to the security of small communities and their livestock. People who live where there are paved sidewalks don't understand that so well.

Aside from providing jobs (revenue) and meat to the local villages, some of the revenue from permits, etc., ultimately goes to protect not just predators, but all the wildlife in the region, where poachers from Zimbabwe (where Obama would like to take us, economically) have been raiding the local wildlife.

I wouldn’t kill a lion unless I was certain it was approaching me in anticipation of its next meal. Simple.

Hope she at least makes a nice rug out of that one.

“Rest assured, that lion got eaten. “

Yes. My point was that the vast majority dont hunt lions to fill the freezer.
