Rep. Trey Radel, a Freshman Republican Congressman from Florida, hasapologized to his constituents today, sincehe hasbeen charged with misdemeanor cocaine possession.

Radel was arrested back on Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C. According to MSNBC, he was in D.C. Superior Court Tuesdayandwill have another court appearance Wednesday morning. Ifhe’sconvicted, he could be sentenced to 180 days in jail and a fine up to $1,000.

“I'm profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, andthepeople of Southwest Florida,” Redel said in a statement, reports CNN. “I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. As thefather of a young son and a husband to a loving wife, I need to get help so I can be a better man for both of them.”

Radel, a former journalist, did not say he would resign, instead that he hopes to set an example for others dealing with addiction. “I know I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it, hopefully setting an example for others struggling with this disease,” he said.

I say screw the contrite route. People who apologize are NOT respected. He shouldn't have done it. It's weak.

Not only should he NOT resign, he needs to be arrogantly defiant. Maybe double down and smoke some weed too. I am dead serious. I am sick of all the weak apologizing. The Dems get away with being in your face defiant. It works.

This is one of the little negatives as the Tea Party enthusiasm progresses. Wannabe players will toss their name around and pretend to be good-standing citizens and supporting Tea Party values.

The truth is....you generally know a limited amount of information about these characters. Maybe the majority are clean and good decent leaders. But as we see in this case....Radel was screwed up before the election process, and screwed up after the election process.

Let him resign, and let the Governor appoint some guy as a temp. That West guy could fill the seat till elections.

Bottom line....we clean up our mess and proceed on.

I second that - then the southern conservative Christians should forgive him - since that’s the right thing to do...he wins on both fronts!

The media is salivating because he voted for drug testing for food stamp recipients.

Unless he is truly sorry....then his approach is fine.

The story in MY mind is how the local media here mentions in EVERY STORY how he is a TEA PARTY guy....that and the fact that this is a pretty minor charge....180 day sentence and $1,000 fine....but it is being hyped like he raped and murdered a bus full of nuns.

Why? why does he need to get the hell out? How is he selfish? Really?

Who will his replacement be? Will he/she be better or worse? Why are you so anxious to give up ground? The Dems wouldn't.

LOL! Okay lets test that theory. After all, no consequence is to great if it satisfies your moral uprightness.

Back when I was an undercover DC cop (70s), the Hill was the best place to score nose candy.

I'll be shocked to hear the DEMs upset over this, especially since Obama has admitted
to using Cocaine and being a Pot head. And of course a drunkard.

You are correct! Conservatives do NOT need drug addicts as political leaders. He’s an addict and, therefore, is not trustworthy. He needs to resign immediately and let a sober person have the job.

Some years ago, the Congressional GOP came up with the brilliant idea of holding members of Congress to a higher standard by forcing a member to resign if they were charged with any kind of felony. Them Democrats kept their mouths shut. When the GOP couldn’t get support to make it law, they decided to lead by setting an example and at make it a rule for members on their own side of the aisle. The Democrats kept their mouths shut. This guy is toast, just because he is GOP and must follow the others that have been forced off the Hill because of some stupid poison pill the GOP forced on itself years ago.

If they want to talk cocaine use among politicians, i say go for it. It will open the door to discuss a certain person’s sel-admitted coke use..... lots of it. Our country is still seeing the residual effects of that one. Maybe some enterprising journalist can interview his Hawaiian classmate. Come on NBC, bring it on.
