Former Virginia governor candidate Creigh Deeds is fighting for his life after he was brutally stabbed by his own 24-year-old son, who then committed suicide - just one day after he was committed to a psychiatric ward.

Deeds, a state senator, is in critical condition at University of Virginia hospital after he was found in his home in rural Bath County. Deeds was stabbed multiple times in the head and torso and lost large amounts of blood.

The veteran Democratic state legislator's son Gus was found shot dead, as well.

Gus had been evaluated by psychiatrists at a mental hospital on Monday, but could not be committed because there were no beds available, according to reports.

Shocking, kid was basically committed but sent home as they had "no room"...

Guess we'll be seeing a lot more of this in the future....under all the changes.

Surprising that a patient whom the doctors, etc. agreed should be committed, was not TRANSFERRED to another facility if the first facility was full.

RIP and prayers for both son and father.

We don’t have a gun problem, we have a mental health problem.

Thank God he had healthcare coverage.

What? That’s not until 2014? Well, now we are getting to the reason why.

Start the “we need more healthcare for the mentally ill” clock on 10-9-8....

Mental health facilities are in a shambles and there are never enough beds. We can have patients wait in our ER 2-3 days for a bed. And that’s basically ant bed in a large metro area.

This incident proves that we also have a severe KNIFE problem in the United States. We truly need KNIFE control.
The tragedy is that I must post this. The shooters at the Colorado theater, the Connecticut school, Fort Hood, and the campus I can’t remember ALL were either under mental treatment or obviously in dire need of treatment and/or incaciration, but received nothing.
Instead the fingers were pointed at totally inanimate objects that had NO will of their own.

“He shouldn’t have let him back in the house.”

When it’s your child that’s hard to do.

I am so sorry to hear all this. I’ve been close to the suffering caused by severe mental illness more than once. And sometimes it comes seemingly out of nowhere. I had a friend go from basic normal neurotic New Yorker (hey, we are ALL neurotic!) to dead by his own hand in less than a month’s time.

It is the worst. It is almost impossible to get real help. You see that even a prominent person like Mr. Deeds can’t get real help for his family member, and now look what has happened.

And the really irritating thing is that all the talk about “mental health parity” and the new requirements of Obamacare, etc. will do NOTHING to change this.

We need to be able to incarcerate (that is, lock up the body) of those who are a danger to themselves and others. We need to be able to empower sane family members to make decisions for their insane relatives.

My heart goes out to this family.

I wonder what kind of prescription drugs these violent and depressed young men have been on since they were children??

Is there a common thread among these guys?

I find these violent family incidents so disturbing.

I have been lucky but knowing people who have been through this type of thing with either mental illness or alcoholism as a cause I realize how horrendous it can be.

Not just surprising, actionable I would say. They knew he was a danger to himself and others, and they turned him loose, so they share some responsibility for his actions.

If Bush was the architect of Obamacare, the media and democrats would be blaming Bush because Obamacare created the shortage of space.

I've have experience with the psych ward not having beds available. Basically in our situation, the ER HAD to keep the person until a bed became available. There were also no additional charges for the overnight stay at the ER. That is how it should be done, IMHO.
