Washington DC talk show host Chris Plante reported today that Barack Obama omitted the words "under God" from the Gettysburg Address when reciting the great speech for a Ken Burns documentary.
Burns had filmed all living presidents as well as various Hollywood personalities and luminaries to pay homage to the speech which was delivered by Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago, today.
Plante broke the story on Washington DC talk radio station WMAL on his mid-morning program, "The Chris Plante Show."

You know what liberals say about religion. Politicians shouldn’t wear their religion on their sleeve...but their gay pride should be on parade.
By the way, even the Wikipedia version has “under God” in it, so even some low-level clerk would have been able to retrieve the proper version for him at a moment’s notice.
They wouldn't try to deceive, would they?
What do you call a president that won’t salute the flag and removes “under God” from the pledge of allegiance, currency, and from the lassrooms?
A Satanic Muslim who refers to himself as a godly Christian to get elected.

PBS mentions on the site that they asked him to read the first version. What happened behind the scenes is conjecture.
We will never know whether Obama asked for that version or not.
It’s odd, though, that the president would not be asked to read one of the later versions, which include the phrase “under God”. The case can be made that Lincoln did use this phrase when he delivered the speech.
excerpt:
The fact that “under God” is not in the pre-speech transcripts, however, does not mean that it was not included in Abraham Lincoln’s delivery. In fact, the weight of evidence suggests that Lincoln did say the words “under God.” Four separate newspaper reporters, each of whom was present at Gettysburg, wrote down their firsthand accounts of Lincoln’s speech, and all four accounts include the phrase “under God.” (Garry Wills, Lincoln at Gettysburg : The Words That Remade America. New York: Simon & Schuster Trade Paperbacks, New York, Ny, U.S.A., 1992.
pp. 191-92).

To the extent there is any need for a defense on his part, I agree with you.
Yet, the implications of this defense will be ignored — that he is an idiot who can’t get it right.
(Of course he knew exactly what he was doing, or his handlers did).
Do you have the video or audio of Lincoln giving the Address? If so we can settle this right now.
Otherwise, we simply don’t know what specifically was said. We have the two drafts, and the three post-speech versions. I don’t think there was a transcription: The speech was so short people at the event didn’t even realize the President was speaking until he was almost finished.
However, having said that, the Bliss copy - with “Under God” is the accepted official version. So Obama’s just being an a**hole in using the draft text.
“I like some stuff that Ken Burns does. But you really have to know your history when watching his films. He judicially edits them for his particular political and ideology slant.”
“That, sir, is a gross understatement.”
Correct and absolutely correct!
I think the Wiki on the speech describes reporters who were at the scene and reported at the time that he did say “under God.”
Of course he didn’t want to use God’s holy name.
Obama’s big boss—the Earl of Hell—doesn’t like people using that word.
See post 66.
It was just a muslim slip.
This confirms he is neither American, nor Christian. As a lame duck he's no longer concerned with maintaining the lie that he's either of these things.
secular humanists think that the state is god
Garry Wills, in his 1992 book about the Address, states that four newspaper reporters at the scene related this.
To the churchgoing black voters who believed this man’s lie that he is a practicing Christian (raised in several agnostic/muslim households)... SUCKERS!
Yes, mountains of evidence. As noted by the citation of the Wills book.
But no official transcript or copy as delivered.
Given PBS’s admission that they asked Obama to read the Hay copy, I think this is a manufactured controversy. They HAD to have known people would have noticed and talk about it. But did our great Lincoln worshipping President know that? Or was he manipulated into it without realizing the controversy it would generate?
Maybe he one written in his hand, signed and dated, which is the accepted version that was delivered.
By contemporary I meant drafts made at the time of the speech or soon after. Maybe not the best word. Anyway, Lincoln answered various requests for copies of the speech, and those included it, while the drafts made before the speech don't. Check out the link I posted for more details.
Anyway, my point in mentioning it is not to defend Obama, but to point out that there could be another explanation. Before people get to worked up it makes sense to find out which version Obama was given. If it turned out Burns used one of the other versions making a big deal accusing Obama would just make conservatives look foolish.
