I have seen archaea spinning gold in deep south african mines. I have seen archaea living in vulcanic vents in deep ocean waters. I have seen archaea creating plants out of creosote. They have created a fantasyland of light and organisms and plantlife deep beneath ocean waters that receive no sunlight whatsoever, They have been detected on all of our space gear and inside the space station and have hitched rides on the space shuttle. They are all over the cosmos doing what they do best. Which is just about everything. Amazing critters that can adapt even in vacuums and in the center of the sun. They cleaned up the entire gulf coast and people are still looking for the dreaded oil which has disappeared. They live in the antactic and arctic creating new species all over earth every second of every day and yet science gives them credit for nothing. Amazing little unseen critters, creators, and adapters becoming whatever they need to be whenever the need arises. Earth belongs to them far more than it belongs to us, although they are part of us as well. They can be as simple or as complex as they need to be. They fill the universe yet are not considered life, while I contend that the universe is very much alive.
Maybe someday we will see.

Archaea are very bacteria-like, but I can think of no disease caused by archaea. Perhaps their lack of pathogenicity is why archaea study does not receive much funding as compared to bacteria and viruses that cause disease. People do research archaea; there is an annual 3 day conference about archaea, and a journal dedicated strictly for publishing archaea research.
