AUSTIN U.S. Sen. John Cornyn bedeviled by some in the tea party whod prefer him to be more Ted Cruz-like said Friday Republicans must prove they can govern like responsible adults and be a big-tent party welcoming a variety of people who share their principles.
What weve seen is that when were divided, we capitulate. We basically hand the victory to our political opponents. They win elections, and then they get to govern, and that leads us in disastrous directions like were seeing now, Cornyn told reporters.
Cornyn was joined by Gov. Rick Perry at a re-election rally at Scholz Garten before formally filing for re-election as senator.
We need to demonstrate that if the American people are willing to give us the opportunity in this next election to win that election, then we will be the responsible adults in the room. We will actually govern, Cornyn said.
Cruz hasnt endorsed Cornyn for re-election, saying he expects to stay out of incumbent primary elections overall. But Cornyns campaign has said Cruzs political action committee donated to Cornyns re-election.
Asked whether he believed Sen. Cruz who played a leading role in the government shutdown spurred by opposition to the federal health care law is acting like a responsible adult, Cornyn said, I think hes been a great new addition to the United States Senate. The sort of galvanizing attention he gave to the failures of Obamacare during his 21-hour speech I thought was very helpful. We had a minor disagreement over tactics, and that happens but we all live and learn.
Cornyn said he believes they share the goal of replacing Obamacare with something thats actually affordable and works.

Im a big tent republican.

Heres an analogy to work with. Take a small box and fill it with some rocks. Then add some rice, filling it to the top. Now take all the same stuff, but in a different order. Put in the rice first, then add the rocks. What youll find is that if you put in the big stuff first, the small stuff will fit around it. But if you put in the small stuff first, the big stuff wont have room. The republican tent is the box. The Big issues are the socon issues, to be put in first. The little issues are things that can be accommodated around the bigger stuff. A candidate who tries to focus on the smaller issues first and leave out the bigger issues has no way of getting all of us into the tent. He splits the party. The candidate who gets the big stuff right and as much of the little stuff that will fit, he can fit more into the tent. Were often amazed at how much rice can keep fitting in. Folks such as Rudy or Romney flunk some of the big issues, and on some of the little issues it looks to me like anyone elses rice would do just as well. All that remains for us to agree on is which are the bedrock principles and which are not. Why would there be so much invective aimed at rudy or romney from the right? Because there are some bedrock principles that he is leaving out. Bad move. I see rudybot and romneybot postings all the time saying that they would vote for Hunter or Palin, and I see socon postings that say they would not vote for rudy or romney. Thats a BIG indicator of a few bedrock principles that are being left outside the tent in order to let in some rice.

Less Corn, more Cruzbell!
Interestingly enough, I think you speak for a lot of liberals. The DemoSocialists are going to have hell to pay for what they've done to the people.
DOes a two-faced politician, such as Cornyn, use two mirrors to part the hair on his head?
Yes, I agree.
Would love a 3 year gig of hunting these vermin after this is over.
You might have a lot of competition. Who knows how far the repercussions will go when this all plays out. People are going to have blood in their eyes over this.
Yep
Big tent ? The only thing under a big tent is the circus and the clowns.
Its just pollytics
Has Perry not backed Cruz?
I will vote for Cornyn over some liberal or an unproven turd.
Cornyn pisses me off but I have his number, He spilt his hand.
Cornyn is in my crossfires, but pick your shots
No, he didn't. He backed his RINO Lt. Governor against Cruz. I thought you knew that.
Uh huh.
Stop apologizing for Perry. It's embarrassing.
Obama is embarrassing.
Pick yer shots.
Perry has backed Cruz.
Not in the election, he didn't.
Tell me where and when Perry backed Cruz. A link would be nice.
So is Corny, and Perry is backing him.
You know the deal.
It’s pollytics
Dewhurst was an embarrassment, but you have to break up on good terms
Perry was not the ass.
