I stick to bike paths in the linear parks. A sign saying that bicyclists can take the whole lane won’t do you much good if you get run over by someone chatting on their cell phone.

I'm lucky in that with the exception of the first two miles through my subdivision, I can ride the 14 miles to work entirely on a bike path that parallels the road. If I had to ride on the shoulder I probably wouldn't do it. These are very busy 45-55 mph roads and while there was a time when that didn't bother me a bit, that was many years ago.
