Washington: A World Apart
The Washington Post ^ | November 9, 2013 | Carol Morello, Ted Mellnik

Posted on 11/10/2013 6:12:37 AM PST by Poundstone

A Washington Post analysis of the latest census data shows that more than a third of Zip codes in the D.C. metro area rank in the top 5 percent nationally for income and education. But what makes the region truly unusual is that so many of the high-end Zip codes are contiguous. They form a vast land mass that bounds across 717 square miles. It stretches 60 miles from its northern tip in Woodstock, Md., to the southern end in Fairfax Station, and runs 30 miles wide from Haymarket in Prince William County to the heart of the District up to Rock Creek Parkway.

One in four households in the region are in a Super Zip, according to the Post analysis. Since the 2000 Census on which Murray based his analysis, Washington’s Super Zips have grown to encompass 100,000 more residents. Only the New York City area has more Super Zips, but they are a much smaller share of the total of that region’s Zip codes and are more scattered.

“It’s a megalopolis of eggheads,” said William H. Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution. Frey said Washington is an example of how the country is compartmentalizing itself into clusters of people with different backgrounds and world views.

“It’s a magnet for people who grew up elsewhere and came here because they want to be in a place that has an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity. But it means we’re somewhat isolated. A lot of people here may study and advocate for what’s going on in the rest of the country, but they can’t feel what’s going on if it doesn’t touch them.”

Interesting article. As someone who lives in the heart of the SuperZips (Arlington VA), I agree the affluence and education-level of the SuperZips is quite high. That being said, it's also expensive to live here! And the area is very competitive, starting in grade school and extending through working life. So it's not all wine and roses if you live in the DC area.

Also, it’s worth noting that Washington isn’t unique in these respects. The article notes that there are SuperZip areas in several different parts of the country. What’s unique about Washington is the size and concentration of SuperZips.

Fortunately they are working in and with the federal government. They work hard for us to make it right for us. (Do I really need a /sarcasm?)

From the chambers to the chamber pot..

DC’s only cash crop is stealing money from people in other parts of the country. Glitz and beautiful buildings are scant cover for the filth they’ve become...

Little more than mobsters buying fancy cars and clothes trying to look classy. They’re not - and our DC hucksters aren’t either.

Yes, an interesting article. Underlying it, a sense of panic — Washington, DC produces nothing and lives off the fat of the land. Guess what is happening to the fat of the land? Yup. 90 million AREN”T WORKING!!! And the folks quoted in the article know it. They KNOW their children will NOT have it so “good” — even the child who professes to want to be a doctor someday? Really? Under Obamacare? Welcome to the world of capped salaries at $100,000 where all docs work for the government. These folks DO live in a bubble and the bubble is about to pop. Go find a nice area of the country where there is no traffic and your mortgage will only be about 1/6 of what you are paying for the piece of junk you are living in as a government gob in the outskirts of DC. You will be glad you did!

Recession proof due to the expanding largesse of the Federal Leviathan. These “SuperZips” will battle tooth and nail to keep the tax “revenue” flowing.

And in the meantime they comfort themselves with only having to rub elbows with “eggheads” like themselves while discussing nuclear warheads (yes, that’s from the article) instead of associating with the “great unwashed” in flyover country.

There is always plenty of wine, women and song around the capital of a collapsing empire.

What’s unique about DC is that it robs the rest of the country and doesn’t produce anything of VALUE.

Obviously education level has zero to do with competence. The DC area is simply filled with hyper inflated college degreed morons that are straddled with school loans. They live so closely together in love with diversity that they have no clue what it is like to live in the real America where people produce something of value only to have a large portion of their paychecks forcibly confiscated.

In general, it is valid to say that I really dislike city folks.

Let's not be too harsh.

As a geezer I get government benefits.. social security and more.. wait that orignated decades ago. OK, as a citizen (human) my inalienable rights.. no, acknowledged centuries ago.

Defense? Americans have always protected the U.S. from enemies for hundreds of years (starting back in the 1960s Washington could learn from the past about real defense)..

so what has today's Washington done, for example, surely they continue to protect the U.S. against suspected enemies?

They vet the enemy and he is us.

DC denizens hate Tea Partiers because they know we can see their lies, delusions and self-serving excuses.

Liberal elites steal from us - and to make themselves feel better they 'give to the poor' (using our money). They think stealing extra for 'the poor' excuses them from padding their own pockets.

A pox on their houses.
