Wind Turbines Blamed in Death of Estimated 600,000 Bats in 2012
UPI/Breitbart ^ | November 9, 2013

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Wind turbines killed at least 600,000 -- and possibly as many as 900,000 -- bats in the United States in 2012, researchers say.

Writing in the journal BioScience, the researchers said they used sophisticated statistical techniques to infer the probable number of bat deaths at wind energy facilities from the number of dead bats found at 21 locations.

Bats, which play an important role in the ecosystem as insect-eaters, are killed at wind turbines not only by collisions with moving turbine blades but also by the trauma resulting from sudden changes in air pressure that occur near a fast-moving blade, the study said.

Study author Mark Hayes of the University of Colorado notes that 600,000 is a conservative estimate -- the true number could be 50 percent higher than that -- and some areas of the country might experience much higher bat fatality rates at wind energy facilities than others.

Endangered Species Quiesenarts....

But, that’s OK with the EcoNazi’s, because it helps further a Democrat Crony-enriching agenda.

Got my hopes up that it might have been “Moon Bats”.

What happens when liberal interests collide? In this case, the liberal green energy agenda, vs. the enviro-extremist liberals who decry the killing of living creatures and despoiling their environment in pursuit of energy generation????

A couple of months ago there was a story claiming that wind turbines kill as many as 500,000 birds every year, including dozens of bald eagles. But no problem . . .

Why no federal jobs program to hire victims of the Baraqqi recession to harvest the shredded poultry downstream?

"What happens when liberal interests collide?"

So far, nothing. When stories similar to this emerged a few months ago, libs were claiming that the bird deaths were an unfortunate but necessary evil in order to get away from fossil fuel dependency, which they claimed did greater harm to the environment than the turbines.

Bats play an important role in nature. Chopping them up with these absurd machines benefits no one.

Wind farms also destroy hundreds of golden and bald eagles every year.

Yeah, hundreds...

They are killing golden eagles, too. EPA gave a waiver recently allowing that. ANYTHING to further The Agenda. This is totally disgusting. Again.

Who would have thought that a windmill would knock the bat snot out of birds?

Although they look sort of lazy slow as you drive by, the blade tip speed is typically 150mph.

They are using proper scientific language. They collected some data, drew inferences from that data, and calculated the probability that their results were not due to chance. That's what scientists are supposed to do.

The cost of their research grant would be a trifle, compared to the billions of dollars the wind industry gets every year. Money well spent, IMHO.

It’s kinda fun to watch a liberal at a loss for words when you tell them this. Half a million bird deaths a year, including raptors is unacceptable.

On MSNBC they will report that “Obama would be setting up the Wind Turbine Bat Death Committee to investigate a solution to the problem, but the Republicans are blocking funding for it. You see how the GOP kills bats?”

It’s not too hard to imagine what the reaction of the Left would be if these Bats, Eagles, and Hawks were being killed by coal fired power plants.

Feeding and diet

The majority of food consumed by bats includes insects, fruits and flower nectar, vertebrates and blood.[60] Almost three-fourths of the world's bats are insect eaters. Bats consume both aerial and ground-dwelling insects. Each bat is typically able to consume one-third of its body weight in insects each night, and several hundred insects in a few hours. This means a group of one thousand bats could eat four tons of insects each year. If bats were to become extinct, it has been calculated that the insect population would reach an alarmingly high number.[61]

The neoliberal desire to create government-industry partnerships will trounce the leftist desire to protect the environment.

There is more money to be made and distributed through bogus green energy companies than protecting animals.

Not good at all. Bats, while they are scary and get a bad rap, are pretty important to the ecosystem. Once you get past the “ick” factor, they are pretty cool little critters.
