... Obama told two of Cubas leading dissidents in South Florida Friday that he admires their sacrifices, a rare White House recognition of the peaceful opposition on the communist-ruled island.
The most important thing here was the recognition by the president of the United States, the most powerful democracy in the world, dissident Guillermo Farinas said minutes after the meeting.
Farinas, spokesman for the Cuban Patriotic Union of Cuba, and Ladies in White leader Berta Soler met with Obama during a fund-raiser at the Pinecrest home of Jorge Mas Santos, chairman of the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF).

These people used to be opposed to government control of human lives. This week, they embraced a fascist whose entire GOAL is to be the sole arbiter of individual freedom.
FLORIDA NEWS....THIS IS SO SAD.
The Stockolm Syndrome.
If these people like Obama they must have loved Castro.
Obama is still flying around in our plane, while his Obamacare burns.
Fidel!fidel!fidel you have risen from the dead to save us! future illegal immigrant voter about to flood the shores as soon as mcfu##up and lindsey tart graham finish plunging the knife into us again
Interesting choice of words.
Read the article again. It notes that the conservatives broke off from CANF in 2991 to form the Cuban Liberty Council. Also note that NO ONE commented on the article in the Miami Herald. You would think a liberal paper would have at least ONE favorable comment on Obama showing up, but there are none.
Back when Clinton was in office, PBS aired a documentary about the Elian Gonzalez controversy and the gist of it was they were trying to find Cubans in little Havana who supported Elian's return. They did find some, whose identities needed to be protected because of reprisals from within the community. Those who spoke for the return informed the interviewer they could not openly hold a differing opinion than that of the others because they were attacked, physically and financially, by those advocating for him to remain in the U.S. They couldn't understand why the community, who fled to America for their 'freedom' wouldn't respect their freedom to hold a differing opinion.
The show was very eye opening as it provided a glimpse into the mindset of the newly arrived Cubans; it wasn't so much the freedom that we Americans have that they desired, It was the opportunity for them to be the ones 'in charge'. Little Havana is the example - it's another 'Country' within our own.
I admit I missed that. Thank you.
I have known many Cuban-Americans over the years - they are wonderful people and solidly Republican. Of course, like me, they are much older today and may have taken a back seat to a younger generation.
Cuban exiles will now be wearing Che Guevara shirts, with Obama’s face superimposed. HOW DISGUSTING.
Interesting that these people fled totalitarian rule, but here they are cheering one of the most secretive and authoritarian U.S. admins, implementing some of the tactics that could have made fidel proud.
I understand your point. I was among the crowds protesting the Democrat party and Clinton’s behavior during that episode, though I am not Cuban.
I do think the majority report among the community was that Elian’s MOTHER’s wishes should have been honored, and the child should have been allowed to stay with his loving family in the nation of liberty.
How comical it was to see the Democrat party suddenly CARE about a child being with his absentee father...after the policies the Democrats had perpetuated for DECADES encouraged fatherless homes.
As for fear of reprisals, it seems there are always violent individuals who can be found in any community. Of course physical threats are unacceptable in any debate. My observation is that GENERALLY the liberals are the ones MORE prone to attacking their opponents.
When I was stationed in Cuba (1993-1997), Jorge Mas Canosa was a playa in CANF, a right wing outfit. Very surprised to see him rubbing elbows with a Castro wannabe.
I think Obama operatives have infiltrated the ranks.
The left never rests because insurrection is what they do. It is their life’s work. They do not create; they destroy. They do not teach; they indoctrinate. They do not invent; they subvert. They do not nurture; they kill.
We have to wonder what happened to change people so drastically.
