Don’t forget that it is a radical leftist country, in addition to being a Muslim theocracy, and has tentacles throughout the leftist movements of Latin America, especially Cuba, Venezuela, and the newly radical leftist states such as Bolivia and Ecuador.
The Saudis are not Marxists, and in fact are very focused on preserving their monarchy and also preserving their perks as “guardians of Mecca” and titular heads of the Islamic world. I think that Obama, whose goal is to revive this fantasy caliphate Muslim radicals long for, with him as caliph and a new hard line Marxist twist to it, really thought that they would recognize his magnificence and be willing to share. But the Saudis have no intention of doing that, and now he feels he’ll get power through the Iranians.
