I suppose I'll get jumped on, but it sounds like he is equating just the time away from his child like being gone away in a war. And trying to justify his absence as he wants to keep custody of the kid. Although it would be interesting to see what the actual comments his “camp” said.

And lots of jobs take people away from their families months on end. But I imagine Cruise has an easier time of jetting back for a day or two if he wanted to than others.
