The GOP's No. 2 in the Senate, John Cornyn, is facing electoral trouble as virtually half of Texas voters say they want someone more conservative in the Upper Chamber.
The survey, by Public Policy Polling found 49 percent of Lone Star State Republicans want a candidate further to the right than the Senate Minority Whip.
Just 33 percent say they want Cornyn to be given the chance to seek a third term when he faces the voters next year.
A total of 62 percent said they have a higher opinion of the state's junior, Ted Cruz, than they have of Cornyn. Just 23 percent said they prefer the senior senator.
When it came to potential opponents from Cornyn's right, Gov. Rick Perry was the favored candidate. He leads the incumbent 46 percent to 35 percent in a primary, the PPP survey found. Rep. Louie Gohmert trails 40 percent to 31 percent and evangelical minister David Barton is behind 51 percent to 18 percent to Cornyn. Barton announced after the poll was conducted that he would not run despite tea party pressure.
"GOP voters are open to replacing John Cornyn, it's just a question of whether there will be a candidate strong enough to pull it off," said PPP's president Dean Debnam.
Among all Texas voters, Cornyn still leads potential Democratic candidates Julian Castro, mayor of San Antonio, 49 percent to 35 percent, and former Houston Mayor Bill White, 44 percent to 39 percent.
The poll of 500 voters was conducted from Nov. 1-4. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

Ted Cruz is right. He fights for smaller government. When did Cornyn ever do that?
They do so at their peril, don’t they?
While I would love to see a real Conservative, to be blunt, I think Perry is too stupid to hold public office.
This is damn impressive when you consider that the sample polled is not Republican voters but Texas voters. Cornyn would be wise to seriously consider retiring.
Plus Perry is no conservative. I’d initially warmed to him, but when he displayed more affection for illegal aliens than for American citizens, he lost me for good.
There was a fair amount of chatter on the local tv news last night. I believe trial balloons are being lofted. Perry needs to sort out if he can run for Senate and then almost immediately start running again for President.

Is that because Barton said yesterday on Beck’s show that he wouldn’t run?
Perry is an unusual mixed bag. What makes me hate him one minute is almost balanced by something that makes me love him the next (throwing down the gauntlet in front of Homobama.)
Slowly the Republican party is starting to understand that the Tea Party Revolution was a CONSERVATIVE movement not a Republican movement. Cornyn could have shown his dedication to conservative ideas but instead choose to attack Cruz. One really finds out who his friends and enemies are in the heat of battle not in the rally speeches that occur before it.
John Cornball must be guffawing at this poll, for he has no opposition to my knowledge.
I think it's more to do with the general dissatisfaction with Cornyn. There's an "anybody but Cornyn" scent in the air here.
I'm wondering why Michael Williams name hasn't come up in the discussion. He's got some conservative cred, has won statewide before and is a fantastic speaker.
Many wouldn’t recognize Cornball if he strutted down their mall, but they keep voting for a familiar name on the ballot. Tom Pauken should have run for senator instead of governor. Oh, wait, Cornyn has already defeated Pauken in the 1998 attorney general primary.
You’ll see the Texans stick with Cornball! But I have no real idea why.
They are not determined to ignore, they are determined to quash. I can’t imagine what the party leadership expects to gain taking such a hostile position with its base.

Erick Wyatt, Dwayne Stovall, and Linda Vega have announced. Some time in December is the filing deadline. In a four person race, even with little support among the opponents, if we can keep Cornyn under 50% in the primary, whoever is second can attempt to take him out in a runoff. In the mean time, he will have spent a ton of his “warchest”.
It’s a long shot but well worth the battle. Let him defend his awful votes, his pitiful leadership and his endorsements of Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist.
