ESPN Analyst: 'Star Spangled Banner' a 'War Anthem,' Shouldn't Be Played Before Games

On ESPN’s Around the Horn, frequent guest Kevin Blackistone of the Dallas Morning News said that football games should not include the singing of the national anthem beforehand, as that added to the “military symbolism.” He actually called the Star-Spangled Banner a “war anthem.”

Blackistone was addressing controversy over Northwestern University’s American flag-themed football uniforms, designed to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project. In a show segment titled “Buy or Sell,” Blackistone said that he would “sell” the uniforms:

LOL.
Haven't been able to bear watching ESPN for years.
Just wondering if when Boomer Berman speaks he still sounds like he is straining to pass stool.

Sounds like it’s time to levy a tax on all subscribers to ESPN—510% sounds reasonable to me.

I’m beginning to believe there are more morons in sports news journalism than in plain old news journalism.

It's hard to believe but they are a whole different lower sub level of moron.

What a surprise: ESPN’s Kevin Blackstone is a bigoted black racist and socialist/Marxist sympathizer.

Once they force the Redskins to change their name, they aren’t going to stop.

The Redskins’ owner knows that if he knuckles under, then fan loyalty is toast. Might as well announce the end of the team.

Liberals for all their wish to call themselves "Progressive" are really as retrograde as any one you could care to meet.

Every single bit of silliness they spout is a discredited old idea that got bunches of people killed in the past.

Even their "bright new" idea of socialism is just feudalism in a new dress.

I am getting very tired of the same old tired "bright new" ideas.

I've had this conversation before. I generally offer a compromise - drop the Star Spangled Banner and substitute Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue. "We'll put a boot in your ass" is certainly more pacific than "rockets' red glare", I should think.

Well, I'm just trying to be helpful here.

Maybe my satire from 2007 was more on target than the MSM would like to think. I’ve pasted it below:

Obama Explains National Anthem Stance

Hot on the heels of his explanation for why he no longer wears a flag pin, presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama was forced to explain why he doesn’t follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

According to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

“As I’ve said about the flag pin, I don’t want to be perceived as taking sides,” Obama said. “There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.’ If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.”

A lot of announcers are former jocks. As such, they no doubt had head injuries. What’s hard about connecting the dots on that one?

He probably got beat up by some marines and wants to fight back by dissing the entire patriotism of the country. Poor pathetic little thing. He needs some warm milk and a swift kick.

All it takes is one person to stand up and start singing it...

I believe many others in that audience will join in...Just make sure you start it in a lower key so the high notes are easy to hit...;-)

Just my opinion...

I notice a while ago that the ESPN talking heads seem to make inflammatory comments just for attention. I would put Blackistone’s comments in that category. Although, it would surprise me that Blackistone really believes what he said.

Something else I noticed about ESPN is that they have seemed to pander to the lowest common denominator audience wise ever since they were bought out by Disney. That’s fine if that is what they want to do but I don’t watch the network anymore.

I wonder if this idiot actually believe this or he's just trying to get ratings...

This is not the first time Blackistone has offered this bizarre opinion.

Once upon a time, the Dallas Morning News had the best sports page in America.

Kevin Blackistone is one of the reasons why they lost that title years ago. As a sports columnist, he's not interested in a subject unless there are a.) racial overtones that can be exploited or b.) a progressive political point that can be made.

The professor is not entirely wrong. Until recently (meaning since WWI or so), the US did not have “Dead Presidents” on coins, it had allegorical figures representing liberty (usually a Greek or Roman goddess, sometimes a Native American), along with the Eagle (or a Buffalo) representing America.

The coinage did not have “In God We Trust,” as there was no deification of the state; instead, we merely had a new secular order. There was no pledge of allegiance to the flag, nor - as originally proposed - a Nazi-like salute to the flag, later changed to a hand over the heart. But, with the progressive movement, there was an effort to create a nation out of a federal republic.

Now that we have a nation and everybody “knows” that we are one “nation, indivisible,” guess what, instead of the nation being a Christian nation, upholding traditional values like honesty, work, thrift, marriage and so forth, it is an atheistic, or even an anti-Christian nation. The state is jealous of its power and will not share it with the church.

Surprise!
