LETTER: Obama, not Ted Cruz, is to blame

Published: Wednesday, November 06, 2013

To the Editor:

To the two gentlemen from Wyndmoor and Oreland who have elevated Ted Cruz to an emperor who single-handedly closed down the government: You give him way too much credit. Truth be known, it was the president who shut down the government and informed the agencies to make it as painful as possible. This was a quote from one of the park rangers who set up barricades outside the WWII memorial. This was to prevent anyone from entering an outside memorial which never had barricades or park rangers before. The excuse from the government was to prevent vandalism. You give Ted Cruz credit for evicting people from their own homes, which happened to be on federal land. Never before in prior shut downs has this ever happened.

The House was willing to fund everything except Obamacare aka ACA. Then it came down to just a delay in Obamacare. Harry Reid would not bring it up in the Senate, and the president said multiple times that he would not negotiate. Unfortunately, Cruz and others were not successful in even delaying Obamacare.

On Oct. 1, 2013 the Obamacare website was supposed to have been up and running. Surprise, there have been “glitches.” Most people cannot get on to sign in, let alone browse for the best plan. A majority of those who were able to sign on have signed up for Medicaid which you and I pay for, not the ones who have Medicaid. More people have received letters canceling their coverage because it does not come up to Obamacare standards. Others have seen their premiums skyrocket. Why should we pay for others birth control pills when they are cheap enough? Why should seniors pay for maternity care? Then there is the question of the 26 year olds still being on Mommy and Daddy’s plan. They should be out in the workforce and paying their own way, but then again if they can’t find jobs or can only find part time jobs they can thank Obamacare. I do agree that people with pre-existing conditions should be covered.

Does anyone realize that the government taking over health care, one-sixth of the economy is controlling your life? Who do you want to make decisions about your health, you and your doctor or some Independent Payment Advisory Board? The key is the word payment. Will this advisory board pay for your 85-year-old grandfather’s pacemaker or just say keep him on his meds, and if he needs it give him a pain pill.

Are Americans willing to let our system turn into the Canadian system of waiting and substituting known treatment for lower cost treatment? I am one American who is not. Let the free market work because anyone knows when the government sticks their hand in something, it gets messed up.
