Obama Administration Uses Pirated Code on Healthcare.gov
The new Obamacare website Healthcare.gov has had its fair share of problems over the past weeks, and the trouble continues.
As it turns out, the Government website uses the open source software DataTables, which is a plug-in for the jQuery Javascript library.
While using open-source software is fine, the makers of Healthcare.gov decided to blatantly remove all references to its owners or the original copyright license.
In other words, they simply took the open-source software and are passing it off as their own, a clear violation of the GPL v2 and BSD (3-point) licenses DataTables uses.
For a comparison, here is the original DataTables file and this is how it looks on Healthcare.gov.

They probably granted themselves a waiver for that, too.
How much did we pay for the open source code?
A friend of mine just picked up a stalker who used the Torrent lack of security to get all her passwords and bank records.
Sounds about right for a ObamaStalker.
open source free software and this cost the taxpayers how much??
The website they made? Oh only about $600 million bucks.
Obama is both the POTUS and a DICTATOR. I suggest we simply call him the POTATOR.
They actually did the original coders a favor by not associating them with this train wreck.
"They didn't build that"!
Dictus
Well, in all fairness, no one can build a web site for only $600 million, so I can see why they had to cut a few corners here and there.
In no way is this a defense of osamabama, but both copies have the copyright headings in them for Allan Jardine. The gov sample has a lot of the function commented out. In fact, I don’t know why anyone would want to add the extra bandwith of headings/comments/etc to any documents sent to a browser to be executed. In fact, javascript docs should be compressed to remove any and all whitespace and non-executable text.
I'm not sure I agree with that. In the old days, when we were all on 300 baud modems, a KB or so was a big deal. That's just not an issue these days.
The irony is that this is the same Administration who seizes domains over alleged copyright violations and piracy.
I’m sure they will get right on this with the same zeal and expediency shown against torrent uses sharing Hollywood’s precious smut.
It’s OK to seize property under Communism, isn’t it?
As a former member of this administration infamously said;
“At this point in time what difference could this possibly make?”
Should proceed cautiously here. The link shows the original code at version 1.9.4, while the “pirated copy” is at 1.9.1. What I want to see to close this loop is what did the code boilerplate look like when it was at 1.9.1.
