Thousands of Russian nationalists march in Moscow

Moscow (AFP) - About 10,000 Russian ultra-nationalists marched through Moscow on Monday in a protest against Muslim migrants that saw police make dozens of arrests.

Moscow authorities said they detained about 30 young men for making Nazi-style salutes and breaking the windows of cars driven by people who looked like they came from impoverished Muslim regions of the Caucasus and Central Asia.

"Why are there foreigners in our cities? This is our home," said a young woman on the march who identified herself only as Nadezhda.

Another man with a shaved head and a young child on his shoulders said simply: "We are all Russians here. Kids have nothing to be afraid of."

He spoke as a group of flag flag-waving youths marched by holding up a banner proclaiming: "Today, a mosque -- tomorrow, jihad."

The protest concluded with a booming performance by Kolovrat -- a white supremacist rock group whose lyrics idolise Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and call for the destruction of other ethnic groups.

The demonstration took place in the same blue-collar region on the city's outskirts that saw riots break out three weeks ago over a deadly stabbing blamed on a citizen of Azerbaijan.

Attacks on ethnic minorities and foreigners working in the city have been a regular feature of the annual "Russian March" -- an event coinciding with a new Unity Day holiday President Vladimir Putin introduced to commemorate the expulsion of Poles from Moscow in 1612.

The US embassy in Moscow urged Americans to steer well clear of the protest and be vigilant throughout the day.

"Extreme violence has been witnessed during previous nationalist protests, and spontaneous demonstrations of support may appear anywhere throughout the city, at any time of the day," the US embassy said in a special security message.

You mean to say that Americans who are pushing for the indoctrination of children into the ways of same sex sodomy are being advised that because of political unrest, it may not be a good idea to tell the Russians that they are "doing it wrong"?

While they may have a point about allowing too many Moslems on their soil, the Russians also have a strong trait of xenophobia. Looks like they are getting back in touch with that.

Wonder when the Chinese will do the same. They share the same trait.

These are Russian citizens protesting the fact that other Russian citizens are moving from one city in Russia to another city in Russia.

IMHO, recent Russian xenophobia is a novel phenomenon, probably borrowed from Europe along with a skinhead subculture getting mixed with sentiments of earlier Christian and Jewish immigrants who fled to Russia being persecuted by Muslims in Stans at the end of the Soviet rule.

So-called pogroms from the late days of the Russian Empire has nothing to do wth present Russia and it’s cultural traditions. All of these pogroms has targeted Jews, not Muslims and happened in that is now independent nations of Poland and Ukraine.

That is why it is fair to call pogroms a Polish or Ukrainian tradition.

We could use a little bit of that xenophobia in this country, if only to stop the GOP-e geldings from pushing so-called 'immigration reform'.

>>>These are Russian citizens protesting the fact that other Russian citizens are moving from one city in Russia to another city in Russia.<<<

In fact not. The majority of immigrants are foreigners. Residents of Russian North Caucasus who are technically a Russian citizens (Chechens, Dagestanis) but pretty much unwanted in European Russia are part of the problem but all the Chechen population in their homeland and the rest of the world is less numerous than the number of illegal Uzbeks and Vietnamese in Moscow metro area alone.

A phobia is an irrational fear. There is nothing irrational about protecting one’s culture and not rewarding bad behavior.(illegal immigrants)

Illegal Vietnamese in Moscow?

That’s what the Russians get for supporting communist Vietnam from Ho Chi Minh to now. Ha!

Ten years ago I was deployed in Uzbekistan. The young Uzbeks missed Soviet rule/subsidies & spoke well of Stalin. Most Russians had already left & migrants were following them westward. What goes around.....

FYI, citizens of Azerbaijan are not citizens of Russia, much in the same way that citizens of Mexico are not citizens of the US.

In fact Soviet support of Ho’s regime has screwed Vietnam badly because so is the nature of communism. And Soviet collapse has nearly destroyed Nam along with Cuba and Stans. At least Vietnam and Cuba are slowly on their way to market economy. Stans are still struggling between theocracy and tinpot dictatorship.

Citizens of Azerbaijan are not Russian citizens, but there are plenty of ethnic Azeris who are Russian citizens.

Dagestanis, Ingushetians, Chechnyans, Ossetians, and other heavily Muslim ethnicities are citizens of the Russian Federation.

If the Russian Federation is a free country, these citizens have the right to move anywhere in the Federation they choose to.

So does many Mexicans who are a US citizens.
These Azeris has the same rights like the rest of the Russians, just like Chechens and Ossetians.
What is your point?

Get out an Atlas. Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are not part of Russia. Just as Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Costa Rica are not part of the United States.

Get out an Atlas.

That's better advice for youself than I.

Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are not part of Russia.

No one said they were. No one even mentioned them until you did.

Just as Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Costa Rica are not part of the United States.

Puerto Rico is, however.

And any Dagestani born and raised in Machhachkala has just as much right to live and work in Moscow as any Puerto Rican born and raised in Dorado has to live and work in Peoria.

You seem to fundamentally misunderstand the article.

The article is about Russians who are marching in the streets to protest the fact that their fellow Russian citizens have a right to live and work in Russia.
