Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?
That’s the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.
Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.
Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. You’ll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.
At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. That’s part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.

I just came across this site, but in many ways we have been living this ‘challenge’ for the past 45 days anyways. My husband and I split our time between Canada and Australia.When in Aus (where we are now) we travel in our van, so our pantry isn’t large, and we really can’t stock up.We housesit (and eat from our pantry, when doing this)and camp while we are here. I have been keeping track of our grocery expenses.In Canada we eat very similar to this too.
We eat lots of great meals...roasts, stews,chili, rice/meat meals. Breakfast is cooked oatmeal, pancakes, bacon and eggs etc, lunches are usually leftovers, sandwiches, soups etc. I like to bake cakes, usually a basic scratch recipe, and adding fruits, spices, etc to change flavours.We buy lots of fresh fruits/vegs..rarely canned, and never frozen.
In 45 days we spent
=$273.28 food
This works out to be $3.04 each, per day.
My Parents lived through the Depression. They were still poor years after the World War Two ended.
My Mother’s family ate Mayonnaise Sandwiches. They made their own Mayo, (Oil and Eggs) and they ate day old Bread. It filled their Stomachs.
Even after I was born and my Family worked hard to move up the economic ladder to Middle Class, we still ate Mayonnaise Sandwiches. We did upgrade to Hellmans Mayo and Wonder Bread though.
Food stamp payouts are adjusted for the cost of living in the particular area.

The ‘poor poor’ lady in Florida trying desperately to feed 4 adults on EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS A MONTH could get SIX HUNDRED DOZEN eggs with that money. Or, four HUNDRED pounds of the pork loin. Nearly 3/4 of a ton of rice for her ‘rice based economy dishes’ for that money.
We feed 2 adults and 3 kids for way less than half of her $800/month. And she has the nerve to bitch about losing $44???? $756 is still WAY more than we spend per month.
You need to visit the rural south and just stand in the checkout land of a grocery store to see what the welfare peeps are buying. I know many of them.
I know exactly ONE who actually coupons and buys managers special meats and checks the clearance shelves. She also gardens extensively. The reason? She’s filling her prep larder with the overage each month. She’s up to nearly a year of food in her prep pantry. All on foodstamps.
If the foodstampers don’t want to hear the bitching about the wasteful use of the money, then either don’t take the money! Or manage your lifestyle in such a way that you don’t weigh 300lbs feeding in someone ELSES wallet! You take someone’s money, you take their bitching. That’s one of life’s little lessons by the way.
I personally don’t busy body into other people’s food carts like the whiners on here do. So - you grew up in Africa - let me tell you - you aren’t in Africa any more, Dorothy! I paid plenty over the years for people who got food stamps and didn’t complain as much as the bitc**s on here. Its almost sickening to read these posts. I guess because none of us have control over how the feds spend our money - we grasp at the lowest hanging fruit - food stamps. Then some on here post menus as though they are certified dieticians. Whenever there is a thread about food stamps - I can hear the stampede. God, with the mess this country is in - some of you must think this is the biggest problem facing us. And the hypocrisy of it all is that the whiners and bit**ers are those who point the finger at liberals for whining and bit**ing.
Tell me about it. Why do you think so many of them brave shark infested waters to show up (illegally) in Florida. Bypassing, I might add, the People’s Paradise of Cuba in the process. All to come to the evil Yankee colony to suffer the capitalist exploitation from the racist old white men who run the place /s

And, while you’re at it - why don’t you write a manual on how everyone should raise their kids and what they should be taught in school - and what religion they should follow. In other words, why not just become a liberal and tell others how to live their lives? You all can complain all you want - or bitch as I call it - but, it won’t do one bit of good. Here’s a thread you should be interested in....Senator Questions Federal Grant Money To Distribute Islamic Books - looks like a waste of your tax dollars to me. Hurry, get there and complain before it gets too long. (as of right now - there are 2 replies) Maybe you should offer some wisdom on what books should be distributed with your tax dollars - and, while you’re at it - offer a list of books which others must read and what they can’t.
I’m quite aware of the fraud in the food stamp program, and there isn’t much any of us can do about it - just as we can’t do a darned thing about our tax dollars being wasted on anything else the government decides to spend it on - and I’ll be danged if I’m going to try and tell others how to live, what they should eat, where they should live or what they should wear - by doing that I might as well become a lib. We talk so much about the utopia the left believes in, but we on the other side - also have our ideas of what utopia is - it isn’t a perfect world with perfect people in it.
Then just get yourself a megaphone and hit the streets with your message. What’s stopping you? You don’t care what they teach their kids, etc., but why not? You seem to care so darned much what they eat. Being a little hypocritical, are we?
I can tell you aren’t a Christian. No, you don’t dish out crap - Jesus said to turn the other cheek. He also had some guidelines about life - and yes, I’m well aware that there are moochers - not just in the area of food stamps - but our Congress critters are the biggest moochers of all - think about it!

They're just being good capitalists. I'd do the same thing in their situation.
As for those shafted taxpayers, to hell with them! They should have thought before voting — or just stayed home and let those with high information make the decisions.
