HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Retired Marine colonel and Iran-Contra figure Oliver North said in Huntsville Friday that that he is "deeply concerned" about the data being collected on American citizens by American intelligence agencies.
"I think the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution has been trod on," North told a press conference before addressing a crowd of 350 at a young Republicans' dinner at the Davidson Center for Space Technology. North added that "the Republicans in Congress are complicit by not insisting on a select committee to investigate not just NSA, but Benghazi, the IRS, the spying on Americans, enemies' lists being compiled."
"I think all of that would be worthy of a select committee," North said, "and I think I know a little something about select committees."
North, 70, rose to national prominence in the late 1980s as a staff member attached to the National Security Council during the political scandal called the Iran-Contra Affair. The United States covertly sold arms to Iran in an attempt to free hostages held in Beirut, Lebanon, and North helped transfer the proceeds to Contra rebels fighting the regime in Nicaragua in violation of a congressional edict. He was charged and convicted of several felonies after testifying to a select congressional committee, but the convictions were later vacated by a court because of improper prosecution methods.
North told reporters that a grim fate awaits Edward Snowden, the former CIA employee and National Security Agency contractor who leaked secret documents about American intelligence gathering methods to the press earlier this year. Snowden is now in Russia under political asylum.
North said the continuing leaks are "the inevitable consequence of an enormous failure of diplomacy in getting Mr. Snowden to come back to the United States before he got in the hands of the Russian intelligence service."

Damn skippy. Both parties are to blame for this crap. Everyone, and I mean everyone who has supported the Patriot Act is to blame for this. The Patriot Act opened the door to the NSA allowing them to do what ever the hell they want.
I don’t see it quite that way. I see that the obamists are damaging our intel capabilities to go after the baddies while using those same capabilities to go after their political enemies and our supposed allies (which are their political enemies).
I wish I were that optimistic.

Good point, for sure this administration has greatly abused intel for that reason but I believe that’s all the more reason for Republicans to put a stop to it.

The funding for the intelligence agencies falls under the category of funding national defense, so Republicans in general want it and Democrats love the power it gives them. Both sides fund massive intrusions into our lives at a cost of over $100 billion, so when people talk about the national defense budget, they are including these massive black programs that illegally spy on Americans.
Just a grammar nit, but “trod” is past tense of “tread.” The usage in the quote is akin to saying “He gave his son permission to went on the road trip.”
There’s an old speech of Ollie’s from his ‘94 campaign that may still exist on TOWNHALL.com . He was quite the civil libertarian.
Then, he fell into the talk radio / FNC universe and spouted the Bushbot line for 15 years and I never heard him like that again. Until this. Good for him!
Well, yes, Col, you are correct. The GOP has abdicated their responsibilities. Clearly, the collection of private data from a business, without indicating the target of the search, based on probable cause, is unconstitutional.
I don’t understand why the GOP can’t make this simple argument. There is no due process.
