Orson Scott Card, the outspokenly homophobic author of the book Ender's Game, won't get any of the box office money from the movie that opens tomorrow. So is there still cause for boycott?
Though there has been a call to boycott the film over Card's support of anti-gay causes, Josh Dickey of The Wrap reported yesterday evening that Card will not benefitat least not directlyfrom the film's success. Sources "both inside and outside the companies that produced the" movie confirmed to Dickey that Card gets no back-end on the movie, and has already been paid the money he will get from the adaptation through a "decade-old deal." Card's deal for the movie, which lingered in development for many years, was done long ago, and Dickey explained that, by the time the iteration of the project that finally made it to the screen got underway, "Cards involvement, both creative and financial, had dissolved to virtually nil."
Card has a producing credit, but he wasn't involved in the film creatively, Dickey reports. That goes in contrast to authors like J.K. Rowling and Suzanne Collins, who made deals that gave them a say in the filmmakers' decisions and kept the money flowing. (For what it's worth, director Gavin Hood told us in an interview earlier this month that he did have to meet with Card, "because he had approval rights on the director and they were hiring me as a writer director.") Of course, the success of a film will likely drive book sales, with some of those going to Card.

Thanks for the suggestion. they sound great
Thanks for linking to that. I’m liking what I hear.
That’s certainly better than what a friend of mine tried to get me to listen to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K86B4AJOK8
Some of the more melodic growler bands aren’t so bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD5tU-5NXd4
Homophobic? I don’t think he is afraid of homosexuals, just disgusted by their behavior like most normal folks.
HOMOSEXUAL, because there’s nothing GAY about it.

I want to see these guys Feb. next year with another melo-death band.
I prefer women to play something I don’t already play, like drums or violin.
Not sure what you mean. Chik-Fil-A may not have exactly been Jack Chick about the matter, but the owner said as late as last year that homo marriage was wrong.
But he never said he didn’t welcome homos to eat at his restaurants.
And the gospel doesn’t order any such thing, any more than that he shouldn’t welcome any other kind of sinner to eat at his restaurants.
I think we confuse gospel with “nice Christianized society.” They are completely different entities. Gospel is a hook with which to catch sinners for Christ. Keep that in mind, and you get quite a different view than keeping a society nice and Christianized. You might have to embrace some very ugly situations, not endorse but still embrace, for the sake of actual gospel.
I don’t believe in cussing any more, but I feel like saying dog gone it here.
Or rather dog gone the half-gospel we’ve been exercising for way too long.
The arm of the Lord is not too short to save, yet we’ve been operating with our gospel arms cut off at the elbow with respect to the homo crowd. And it rightly disgusts the Lord that we do.
YES THE GOSPEL CAN GET SOMEONE OUT OF HOMOSEXUALITY... that ought to be an elementary lesson but we are so chicken today. It is very simple: “Honor God in your body.” This will provide an actual supernatural lift of the use of the body INTO RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD (and out of sin). If enough Christians ministered to homos closely enough to coach them through this process, they would be amazed at what they would see. Folks. God has to be grieving big time over our chicken gospel today. I don’t know what is to be done about it except start preaching a gospel that is not cut off at the elbows any more.
Arguing with some dumb liberals about this on Facebook.
“I don’t want to pay OSC money to see this.”
He’s not getting money. You don’t have to see it.
/rant over, now I’ll try to sleep.
And... well I do think I know the problem.
People don’t want to bear a cross for Christ any more.
Homos represent an intense spiritual battle to reach. More intense, perhaps, than any other single sin. It is a profound abuse of the love capacity that God has put into human creatures. This is one of Satan’s grand prizes with his meat hooks dug deep in. Casual Christians need not apply here. Christians willing to bear the cross (the burden of fighting for the sake of bringing blessing into the world) and knowing that it could be very tumultuous on the way to the reward, are needed. No modern church polite Christianity, this. This is God’s tough stuff. Satan kicks back. Thank the Lord, He does not permit these attacks to go beyond the opposing capability of grace that He furnishes. But it needs gospel guts.
>> homophobic, anti-gay
What are the defining characteristics of homosexuality?
We can understand this from a spiritual point of view. Psychology does not reach to the depth required to comprehend it.
It is a kind of idolatry. Some call it a fetishism. The male who lusts in this manner generally has a deep spiritual need for masculine identity, and is yet estranged from God, which is the source of that blessing. Satan steps up to such cases and offers them his illusions, and acting out upon these illusions in turn offer thrills (hence the term “gay”) but never satisfy beyond the brief duration of the illusions. It’s sometimes tied in with fetishism of inanimate objects associated with masculinity, through which similar satanic illusions flow. Fetishism alone is also possible in this context, but as there will be no buggery involved, it isn’t generally called homosexuality.
The textbook definition would be “sexual attraction to the same sex” but that’s kind of like describing a cancer as an abnormal growth. True, and yet profoundly uninformative.
Also understanding the spiritual nature of the battle is crucial to being able to fight it successfully. The gospel WILL free a man from homosexuality. However our modern Christianity is almost bereft of the experience required.
“Cards involvement, both creative and financial, had dissolved to virtually nil.”
Except he wrote the book, so they screw with it a their peril.
I read the book a few years ago, it was pretty good.
The movie is a good intro to the book. I would never have believed they could keep it as close to the book as they did.
The book was great.
They did.
They did the book justice. I saw it tonight and was amazed that they could come so close with so little time. It “feels” like the book read.
He was spouting off after the company already changed their charities to gay-approved mode.
You gave a far more elegant explanation than the carnal derivatives I was expecting. I appreciate your perspectives.
I want everyone to understand what’s be recognized when it’s the behavior of homosexuality that’s being courted to the levels of sublimation. Essentially through law, the function of the anus is considered to be the equivalent of the vulva “for the better good of society”.
Neither Faith nor love are exclusive determinants to homosexuality. These common attributes are for everyone’s benefit. No Christian should deny this.
I don’t give a crap about the private behavior of people old enough to go to war. I have no problem with personal contracts. But don’t tell me two dudes can make a marriage. That’s #ing idiotic.
Still does not tell much. What’s “gay approved mode.” Just being what most flaccid modern Christians call “antigay” doesn’t mean you’re “gospel” by the way. True “antigay” would be setting gospel ambushes for Satan, not attempting to fight Satan with weak, useless worldly weapons.
Well, the “elegant” explanation is really the only truly useful one.
I am very unabashedly not evenhanded about “religions” here either. If you can find something truer than the gospel then show it to me. But this is like asking to find something truer than general relativity. However possible in abstract theory, I dare you to do it in practice.
