Henninger: Progressive Government Fails
Wall St Journal ^ | 10/31/2013 | Daniel Henninger

Posted on 10/31/2013 6:26:51 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

What made ObamaCare an exemplar of progressive politics and policy is precisely what has been on view this week in news stories and the Sebelius hearing. It's not that the health program was to be administered by the state or that it promised benefits to all. Liberalism did that for decades. What made it peculiarly progressive were the mandates. And not just the law's individual and business mandates to purchase their insurance. The essence of modern Democratic progressivism is: "You will participate in what we have created for you, and you will comply with the law's demands."

Nothing could have been more crystal clear than the explanation for all the canceled insurance policies from the White House's Jay Carney, the bland face of progressive coercion: "What the president said and what everybody said all along is that there are going to be changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act to create minimum standards of coverage, minimum services that every insurance plan has to provide. So it's true that there are existing health-care plans on the individual market that don't meet those minimum standards and therefore do not qualify for the Affordable Care Act."

If this White House and its progressive ecosystem have a political motto, it's this: Get over it.

American progressivism is politics by cramdown. Ask Jamie Dimon. Ask the coal miners the EPA is putting out of business. Ask the union workers waiting for jobs on the Keystone XL pipeline. Ask Boeing BA +0.02% in South Carolina or the harmless tea party groups from towns no one has ever heard of that were shut down by the IRS, or the 20,000 inner-city parents and students who marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to protest obliteration of their charter schools by New York's progressive mayoral candidate, Bill de Blasio.

"But we will exempt ourselves from them."

It took 70 years for the Soviet Union to implode. Only an Article V. Convention of States can save our Republic now. Washington is hopeless.

“you will comply”

Change THAT simple phrase to “obey” and you have the entire obama cabal nailed.

Barack Obama may have spent a lifetime failing up, but eventually it's just failure.

My favorite line from the article. He's only allowed to fail "up" because we have no truthful media.

The 10th ammendment will kick in at some point soon. States are already starting to go their own way. When things get bad enough they will start nullifying all this stuff and stick together doing it or in groups. The Feds will be powerless to stop them if they team up.

One point Henninger doesn't make re: Obamacare eventual failure has to do with the concept of central planning and central managerial control.

Prior to Obamacare, the management of the health insurance industry and the healthcare industry itself was spread all across the country and often right down to the lowest decision points. As any CEO of a large corporation will tell you, you can't centralize the tiniest details of management. Success operations are those where the little decisions are made by those who are the most familiar with them (i.e. at the lowest practical level).

But with Obamacare and progressive government, you have decisions made at the very top or at the very least delegated to policy wonks who advise the CEO/President/SecHHS.

This is what kills Communism where ever is tried. It is a failed management concept.

This is the very reason we sometimes see previously nationalized companies (in the UK and France for example) get privatized and then takeoff financially and managerially. This is why even some school systems in the U.S. do better under privatized management and ownership.

As Krauthammer and many others have said, Obamacare will not--cannot--succeed.

If Obama weren't such a hardcore Marxist, he might have considered this.

10th Amendment issues will die in the Supreme Court. Mark Levin and the COS is the way to go if we have ANY chance of restoring the Constitution.

Krauthammer: If Obamacare truly self-destructs, it will set back American liberalism for a decade at least…

The Supreme Court is not the end all be all and as things get more dire in this country you will see the states as I said before “go their own way” That means they are not going to be worrying about the SCOTUS.

Its time for everyone to get their head wrapped around the reality that this country is headed for a radical re-set at some point in the not too distant future. Its going to be the states that make that happen.

This Article V convention fluff is great to talk about and sells books for Mark Levin but it is not going to happen and it is not the answer to our problems.

I agree that the states are the answer—but only together. One by one they can get picked off.

The amnesty bill will soon turn red states blue and the window will close.

I don't know, I think I may be ready to start shooting instead.

This is a dangerous game. The history of progressivism is spattered with blood. Resistance or failure of their plans could lead to deliberate induced chaos.

You make an important point. The history of socialists is often marked by violent oppression of opposition. I suppose it did not occur in Sweden but there was little opposition in Sweden. That was not the case in many other now-socialist nations.

As Krauthammer and many others have said, Obamacare will not—cannot—succeed.

But a lot of folks are going to be hurt financially and physicaly while it flails around failing.

No one it seems has the sense or the will to put a bullet in its head.
