Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), the political face of the recent government shutdown, will make his first late night TV appearance on Nov. 8 when he guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Cruzs appearance reflects the increasingly common trend of political figures, no matter how controversial, venturing into late night, often in hopes of softening their image or reaching audiences normally not tuned in to politics. Cruz is mentioned as a possible candidate in 2016, and his appearance would be in line with other past candidates who have appeared in late night in advance of a run. In 2010, Mitt Romney appeared on Late Show with David Letterman as he promoted his pre-campaign tome, No Apology.
In a press release, NBC said that Cruz will discuss the government shutdown, the debt ceiling, Washington gridlock and the state of the Republican party.
I loved watching Johnny Carson when I was a kid but then, we only had two stations and a 12” black & white tv. I have three adult children but I doubt they watch any late night talk shows at all.
Leno needs to invite Dershowitz on the same night with Cruz.
Everyone should hear in what high esteem Dershowitz holds Cruz - ( one of smartest students he’s had )
And Leno should have Cruz’s father on too.
Can you imagine the impact on the Mexifornians ?
Not Cruz, Leno.
I actually thought he looks a little bit like a Hispanic Ronald Reagan.
Leno will treat Cruz well. I think Leno is a closet Republican.
I doubt it. Leno is no Letterman. Jay has been very critical of Obama for the last couple years, and I think he tries to play it down the middle (though you are probably right about the band). Also Jay is always polite to his guests. As he says, his first job is to be a good HOST. Anyway, I think Cruz can take care of himself.
Most that go to these tapings are tourist.
Under 30s watch Jay Leno?
Jay beats every other late night show in all age groups. Which makes people wonder why NBC is dumping him (again). One theory is he’s been too critical of Obama.
I thought it was Fallon who had the racist all-black band?
I can make out one man in that crowd. What is it with women these days?
I retired from an automotive supplier.
We worked with Jay on some technical issues with his collection of hot rods.
The guys we sent out there said Leno was a real decent guy and they enjoyed the experience.
I keep hearing that they’re dumping him. When does his contract expire?
I think in the middle of next year.
I think Leno will be very impressed of Cruz =)
Only late night host I ever watch at all anymore is Craig Ferguson. He’s the most intelligent, creative and by far the funniest of the lot of ‘em. I will, however, watch Leno on 11/8. This will be REAL MUST-SEE TV.
Agreed! This should be interesting. The Lion tamer walking into the den of the lions. Cruz rocks, and he is smart enough to get his message to all the people. Republicans must be squirming. That in itself will be worth staying up to watch as I carve my Halloween Pumpkin. LOL. Happy Halloween!!
I hope he is prepared for the ambush
Racists all black band? Where did that come from? Even Fallon’s band has at least one white guy in it.
