“Three charges for 71-year-old Iranian-born man after bomb scare at Montreal airport”

Canadian Press | 28/10/13 | Last Updated: 28/10/13 4:14 PM ET

MONTREAL —

SNIPPET: “The defence lawyer tells reporters that his client was transporting a bag belonging to someone else.

A bail hearing is scheduled tomorrow for Antony Piazza, who was born in Iran and whose name was originally Houshang Nazemi. It was under that original moniker that he received a 10-year sentence for drug trafficking in the mid-1980s.”

SNIPPET: “He made a brief court appearance today, where the Crown objected to his release.

He faces three charges — being in possession of an explosive substance; conspiracy to transport an explosive substance on an airplane; and endangering the safety of an airport or aircraft.”

SNIPPET: “Police say the material found in luggage at a Montreal airport terminal contained everything needed to make a bomb — except the actual explosives.”

“Man, 71, facing charges after bomb-making materials found at Montreal airport”

SNIPPET: “Piazza’s defence lawyer, Louis Morena, revealed the objects in the carry-on he’s accused of putting through security.

“They’re talking about bullets, they’re talking about powder, they’re talking about wire, they’re talking about briquette,” Morena told reporters.”

“Bail hearing postponed for man arrested at Trudeau airport”

BY PAUL CHERRY, GAZETTE CRIME REPORTER OCTOBER 29, 2013

MONTREAL —

SNIPPET: “In the end, a defence lawyer informed Poulin that a colleague from his law office, Franco Iezzoni, will take the case. The lawyer asked that Piazza’s bail hearing be postponed to Nov. 6 because Iezzoni needs time to become familiar with the evidence in the case.”

SNIPPET: “In 2008, while Piazza lived in Verdun, he told police he had lived in St. Hippolyte the two previous years. He also said that despite being semi-retired, he still ran a video-rental company in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. The company specialized in offering Iranian films to Montrealers. Piazza, who left Iran in 1979, also told police at the time that he had been convicted of drug trafficking in 1985, when he went by the name Houshang Nazemi.

Lawrence Klein, co-founder and vice-president of Thought Technology Ltd., a company that manufactures medical electronics also used for elite athletes in training, said he was stunned to learn that the upright businessman he knew simply as Tony was arrested at the airport on Sunday and had previously served a 10-year prison term for heroin trafficking.

“Tony was just a regular guy,” Klein said of Piazza, a man he needed to rely on often to transfer Thought Technology’s videos from a format used in North America to one used in Europe. Piazza’s video store was located a short distance from Thought Technology’s former location on Belgrave Ave.”
