"No officers were injured during the shooting," Samples said, but "we did have one officer receive a minor injury, not related to the gunfire."
Though police were guarded with details surrounding the case, eyewitnesses claim the shootout was prompted by a code enforcement operation involving an old, rusted and inoperable van owned by Pryor.
Witnesses say a Statesboro Code Compliance officer reported to Pryor's home to seize the van, which has sat idle in the yard for several years.
"He has had the van forever. They have been asking for years for him to move it. He signed some papers, went back into the house, and then all of a sudden everything happened," Roberts said. "The van had a lot of sentimental value for him. He wanted to get it fixed." A tow truck, with the van loaded, was still on the scene hours after the shooting.
The city's Code Compliance department, under the umbrella of Planning and Development, is responsible for "ensuring that the city's physical environment is maintained through the enforcement of codes related to building and property maintenance, sanitation, zoning, etc.," according to the city of Statesboro website. "Code compliance staff is responsible for investigating complaints which may often be categorized as nuisances' including: vacant and dilapidated buildings, overgrown vegetation, front yard parking, abandoned vehicles, litter, etc. The activities of code compliance staff are intended to improve the community's standard of living and enhance property values throughout the city."
Samples said he could neither confirm nor deny the witness accounts, or release the names and job statuses of officers involved in the shooting.

Yeah, no. He was not shot over a code violation. He was shot because he started shooting at the police. Who are you, MSNBC with this selective reporting?
It is, perhaps, worth noting that the BTK (Bind-Torture-Kill) serial killer took an extended break from his murderous ways.
He got himself a job as a code enforcer and derived enough pleasure from this that he didn’t feel the need to to kidnap, torment, and murder women.
“Your shingles are the wrong color, and that overhang is not up to code!!” blam blam!
...
Yes I only read the headline.
Never fails, does it?
He should have taken notes from Carl Drega and Marvin Heemeyer.
George chose, poorly.
“(Pryor) was on the porch. He went inside, came back out and started shooting.”
If this is true, there is no need for a headline that tries to convince the reader that the police shot him over a non-compliance.
He also looks like Jon Corzine’s twin brother.
Just remember this the next time your grass gets a little too tall, or you paint your fence the wrong color.....
Do not cross your HOA, or local code enforcement, it may cost you your life!
“That’ll larn ‘im.”
The man may have thought the code enforcement jerk was a thief.
As a matter of fact ...
You may be closer to the truth than you realize.
Just wait until vehicles before a certain year are declared code violations since they may not have a monitoring black box installed by a renegade owner. If the owner defends and loses, the state wins. If the owner gives in and complies, the state wins.
Don’t let some good cop hate get in the way of common sense and critical thinking!
I wouldn’t blame the police. They were just doing their job, as ordered by the town, and they shot back when he started shooting at them.
But I WOULD blame the “code violation” authorities. This sounds like a peaceful country guy with neighbors who have moved in from the suburbs or something, and can’t stand the sight of an old van waiting until he has the time or money to fix it. So they complained to the authorities until the stupid authorities ordered this home invasion.
The police invaded his property and took his van. They were just following orders. But I hate those kinds of orders. Here in Vermont, having old cars and trucks on the place is common. It takes a “flatlander” to move in next door and start complaining about it. Well, I’m a flatlander myself, technically, but when I move to a new place, I respect the local customs. It’s not my business to tell my neighbors what to do.
No HOA here thank God.
Ain’t nobody going to tell me whether I can paint my aluminum roof!
Wow. I lived in Statesboro for a long time.
Come on, I know a ton of great cops, really good people, who would give you the shirt off their backs. Stop the hate.
Factor - no intent to mislead here on my part.
They had to kill the man, since he would not relinquish his property peacefully.
A rusted old van that had been there for years. The subject of complaint after complaint. He made no effort to remedy the situation. So after years they brought a tow truck. And he opened fire. Just so we’re clear.
